4. “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl”

Season 5, Episode 1

What happened?: This next episode is a Gene-centric one to the core but surprisingly features a lot of moments of Gene and Louise. Anyways, “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl” features Gene and Louise working together to put on his production of “Die Hard: The Musical.”

It all comes to life after Gene is upstaged by his ex-girlfriend Courtney and her musical based on Working Girl. It eventually all culminates in the ultimate mashup of the two musicals and probably the most impressive musical moment on Bob’s Burgers yet.

Why it’s one of Gene and Louise’s best: As for why it’s one of Gene and Louise’s best, there is one constant with Gene’s musical and that’s Louise. As soon as Louise hears about the protest musical, she’s completely down. She helps organizes the cast and make sure that everything goes to plan. While it might be less about love for her brother and more about her hatred for Courtney, she’s still willing to help him out when necessary. Plus there’s no way Louise isn’t getting a cut as she’s charging people five bucks to get in.

This episode doesn’t really scream Gene and Louise, but there are some pretty good moments featuring them throughout. Louise looks out for Gene a lot in this episode and it’s a nice change of pace for the two. Usually, they’re on an equal playing field but it’s clear how much Louise cares about Gene and his musical in the end.
