1. “Drumforgiven”

Season 10, Episode 11

What happened?: The episode begins with the kids heading to the pawnshop so Gene can play the instruments there. Gene shows the girls a drum machine that he’s in love with until the worker, Dino bans him from touching the instruments unless he’s buying them. Louise gets angry and decides that Dino needs to pay for upsetting Gene.

The following day, Gene is incredibly upset so Louise teams up with the Pesto twins, Jimmy Jr, Zeke and Tina to exact revenge. Louise has everyone in the group play an instrument to annoy Dino, resulting in anyone under 14 getting banned from playing the instruments and Gene gets even sadder.

Louise enacts the second part of her plan until Gene comes into the store and declares a drum machine battle with Dino. Dino wins but revokes Gene’s ban and says he can come in on Mondays until the drum machine is sold.

Why it’s one of Gene and Louise’s best: In contrast to the previous episode, this one focuses more on Louise standing up for Gene. She knows how much Gene loves going in the pawnshop so it’s no surprise that she threatens Dino. As for her first plan, it ends up backfiring but it was a nice gesture nevertheless. It’s rare to see Gene get angry at Louise as they don’t really argue. Even though they make up in the end, it was interesting to see how they act for the majority of the episode.

What makes “Drumforgiven” one of their best is how determined Louise is to make Gene happy. Despite everything going wrong, she doesn’t give up. She knows how much the drum machine means to Gene and she’ll do anything for him to get it back. Even though Gene stands up to her and tells her that she needs to stop being so protective, it was a major turning point in their relationship and a perfect end to the episode. “Drumforgiven” should easily be atop the list of best Gene and Louise episodes.
