Maya is now the captain on Station 19, but she’s trying a little too hard to prove her worth. It’s time for her to take a step back.

Station 19 threw us a bit of a curveball by making Maya the new captain of the station. It should have been Andy, but Ryan’s death led to requests of holding the promotion back from her. While that’s caused tension itself, Maya is making things even harder by pushing too hard to prove that she’s a leader.

It’s time for Maya to take a step back. She’s going to start losing the respect and friendship of the unit. You can already tell that they’re struggling to handle one of their own quickly being promoted to lieutenant and then captain.

Her unit isn’t made up of Olympians

More from ABC

Ben spent the episode of Station 19 pointing out that Maya is a former Olympian. That’s all well and good, but the team isn’t made up of former Olympians. Not everyone has that goal, and I do believe it takes a specific type of person to want to achieve that type of greatness. We can all watch and cheer on the athletes, but are we all willing to do what it takes to achieve it ourselves?

There’s nothing wrong with saying no. We all have different wishes in life. Maya needs to remember that her team isn’t made up of Olympians, and she can’t treat them all as if they are training for Gold.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with her wanting them to be the best they can be, but it’s important to emphasize the best they can be. It’s important to work within their own limits while pushing them to achieve greatness.

Too much too quickly

Even if the team was happy to be pushed like Olympians, Maya is doing too much, too quickly. She’s gone from friend to captain with no jump in between. Sure, she needs to make her mark as the next captain, but that doesn’t mean she needs to forget about all her friendships.

I’ve started cringing every time she’s on-screen. I’ve had leaders like her who have gone from zero to 60, trying to prove their worth but forgetting about everything else.

It’s very easy for people to lose respect. After all, respect is a two-way street. Maya is so busy trying to be the captain that she’s forgetting about respecting her team. She’s so busy commanding their respect and loyalty just because of her position that she’s forgetting about the need to respect others for their individuality, their skill, and the fact that they are a team without her pushing for more development.

Sadly, Maya isn’t going to hold back in the next episode of Station 19 by the looks of the promo. She wants them all to go camping for some team-building exercises. It sounds cringing and eye-rollingly stereotypical for someone trying to tick a lot of boxes. She needs to take a step back and remember the team that they were before she became captain.
