8. Escape Room (2019)

As the name suggests, Escape Room is a horror film about a group of six strangers brought together to compete in the deadliest escape room of their lives. Advertised to each participant as a puzzling and exciting new experience, they’re horrified to learn that in this escape room, the stakes are genuine, and not everyone will survive.

While the film didn’t impress critics much, it still did quite well at the box office — enough to warrant a sequel. Judge the movie for yourself. When I saw it in theaters (a January release, my expectations were low), I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had watching the movie. I’d compare it favorably to the Final Destination franchise.

7. The Strangers (2008)

The Strangers terrified me as a teenager, so I’ve kept it in high regard. It is considered one of the best home invasion thrillers of all time. A couple staying in a remote vacation house is disturbed to find three masked strangers at their door in the dead of night.

For some reason, they are targeted by the masked killers, who appear to have a lot of fun terrorizing the couple. The pair will have to go to unspeakable lengths in this thrilling game of cat-and-mouse if they hope to survive the night. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star as the main characters.
