Alex Karev and Rebecca Pope

Alex Karev is notorious for falling for “crazy chicks.” After ridiculing his own friend and coworker for getting personally involved with a patient (more on that later), he did exactly that during a Season 3 arc. This patient (portrayed by Elizabeth Reaser) went by a few names during her tenure on our screens. First it was Jane Doe due to her unrecognizable face in a ferry boat accident. Then Alex dubbed her “Ava” after she couldn’t remember her name. Finally, we learned she’s actually Rebecca Pope.

Once she recovered from her facial reconstruction and checked out of Seattle Grace, we swore that was the last of her. Nope! Rebecca came back in Season 4 and hooked up with Alex before leaving and returning again, claiming to be carrying Alex’s child. Rebecca wasn’t pregnant and Alex eventually had to have her checked in to psych after she harmed herself. They ultimately learned she had borderline personality disorder.

In the end, this went down as one of the most hated storylines in Grey’s Anatomy history. Despite that, it played a pivotal part in exploring Alex’s issues with women and love, something that still hasn’t been resolved coming out of Season 16.

Teddy Altman and Henry Burton

First comes marriage, then comes love? This wasn’t your traditional doctor-patient romance, yet it still ended in heartbreak. During Season 7, Teddy Altman came to the rescue of her heart patient, Henry Burton (Scandal‘s Scott Foley), when she offered to marry him so he could have insurance for his life-saving surgery.

After brief hesitation, Henry accepted the offer and married Teddy! This resulted in a number of unique situations as Teddy continued to date other men, but also had the responsibility of being Henry’s emergency contact when it came to making life-altering medical decisions.

They eventually fell in love to explore what marriage had to offer, but it was unfortunately short-lived. Henry ended up dying during an operation to remove a tumor near his heart because there was too much damage. This unexpected romance paved way for new complexities in the work relationship between Teddy and Cristina Yang, and set up Teddy’s first departure from the show.
