Let him cry it out

The episode would open in the past where new parents Jack and Rebecca were lying in bed, clearly having not gotten enough sleep. The root of the issue would be a restless baby, Kevin, whose crying throughout the night would leave Jack and Rebecca feeling obligated to tend to his needs.

Unfortunately, that seems to be exacerbating the issue, and so, as they lied there, Jack would tell Rebecca the next night they needed to let Kevin cry it out as Miguel and Shelly had advised. Although reluctant, Rebecca would agree.

Fast-forward 12 years and Kevin is the one running low on sleep, having gotten up early to workout with Jack and having stayed up late trying to memorize his team’s playbook. Although Randall offered to teach him some study techniques, Kevin would laugh off the idea while scarfing down 50 eggs.

As The Big Three headed off to school, Rebecca pulled Jack aside and voiced concern that Kevin was running himself ragged. However, Jack would tell her not to worry.

Nothing that’s important comes easy

Rewind 12 years and Jack and Rebecca have just put The Big Three to sleep. While Kate and Randall are sleeping soundly, Kevin begins his nightly meltdown.

Unfortunately for Jack, five minutes of crying would feel like half an hour to Rebecca, and despite his pleas, Rebecca would run off to check on Kevin.

Upon coming back to their bedroom, she would apologize to Jack. However, within seconds, Kevin’s crying would start up again, and Rebecca would make her way to the door. Unfortunately, Jack would block her path and plead with her to allow Kevin to resolve the issue himself.

Eventually, the crying would get to be too much for her, and she’d head for his room once again. However, before she could get to the door this time, Kevin would calm himself down. Nevertheless, this incident would be indicative of the difference in parenting styles between Jack and Rebecca.

Conflict over these parenting styles would ensue between them upon 12-year-old Kevin insisting that he wanted to quit football after having a hard time remembering the plays at practice.

While Rebecca would back up this decision, Jack would chastise Rebecca for always going too easy on him, allowing him to quit extracurriculars when they become too hard.

Rebecca would disagree and head upstairs to relieve Kevin of his duties; however, she would find him studying the playbook with Randall, and she would realize just like when he was a baby, all he needed was some time to adjust. She would then head downstairs to apologize to Jack, who told her he wanted to make sure their kids always felt they had greatness in them, a task that his father never aimed to accomplish.
