Legacy: Isn’t it wild that it’s been a decade since Emily Thorne embarked on her quest for revenge? In a post-Desperate Housewives and pre-Peak TV world, ABC revived the art of the “trashy” primetime soap with Revenge, a guilty pleasure that didn’t make anyone feel all that guilty for getting hooked.
Loosely based on The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, Revenge stars perennial small-screen favorite Emily VanCamp as Emily Thorne, an alias for her real name: Amanda Clarke. As a child, Amanda’s father was framed by the wealthy Grayson family for a crime he didn’t commit.
Years later, Amanda returns to the Hamptons to take down the wealthy individuals responsible for putting her father behind bars, sparring with queen bee Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) every step of the way.
Revenge wasn’t just delicious must-watch television. It also made a case for supposedly low-brow camp to be good. Four seasons hardly seem like enough for VanCamp and Stowe to exchange cutting stares at each other, but the series told a tight, if not sometimes meandering, story of revenge, redemption, and really tight bandage dresses. Don’t sleep on this enduring cult classic or Emily Thorne will break out her red Sharpie and take you down.
Where to watch: All four seasons of Revenge are available to stream on Hulu.
