A long-awaited conversation between Kevin and Randall will take place in Season 5, Episode 13 of This Is Us. Luckily, we have a sneak peek of tomorrow night’s episode, thanks to People.

The feud between Kevin and Randall has created much of the tension in Season 5. What started as a disagreement between the brothers over Rebecca’s medical care, quickly turned into something bigger as 40 years’ worth of baggage unloaded first in the streets of New York City — familiar territory for the boys — and came to a head at Baby Jack’s first birthday party.

Both men would say things that seemed unforgivable at the time, with Randall saying Jack died embarrassed of Kevin and Kevin is a bad actor and Kevin saying the worst day of his life was the day their parents brought Randall home. Although the men have remained civil around each other since then, they’ve been dancing around the issues that brought them to this point.

However, as Randall began to learn more about his past and let go of the pain, he decided it was time to make amends with Kevin.

Although Madison went into labor, halting the opportunity for reconciliation, following the birth of the new Pearson twins, the men did reconcile with the understanding they still had things to discuss. With Kevin and Madison’s wedding looming, Kevin asked Randall to be his best man.

However, not wanting to have any bad blood between him and Randall at the altar, Kevin decided it was time to bury the hatchet and asked Randall if he could fly out to Philadelphia. Randall agreed, which will set off the events of tomorrow night’s episode.

This Is Us: How will this end?

In the promo for the This Is Us episode entitled “Brotherly Love,” Beth and Randall discuss the situation, and Randall tells her that he’s unsure how the conversation will begin and how it will end. Apart from the fact that the men have always felt competition with one another, due to Rebecca’s tendency to neglect Kevin’s emotional needs in favor of Randall’s, Randall needs Kevin to understand what it was like growing up in a house full of white people.

In the exclusive clip from People, Kevin arrives at Randall’s house. They exchange pleasantries, and there’s already an awkwardness in the air as they make idle chit-chat, and Kevin keeps looking at his phone. He apologizes for the distraction and says that he’s waiting to hear back from Robert DeNiro, his movie co-star who he walked out on after learning Madison was in labor.

While Kevin technically quit the movie, it seems as though he and the director have mended fences, and Kevin will be doing reshoots. As Randall asks Kevin if he wants water, Kevin unintentionally cuts him and says he doesn’t want to beat around the bush.

As silence falls between them, Kevin breaks it and says it would be easy for them to catch up, fall into their rhythms, and not really talk. However, he doesn’t want the conversation to get away from them because there are things he has to say to Randall. Silence falls between them once again until Randall takes a deep breath and says, “Here we go.”

They’ve come a long way with each other since tussling on the streets of New York City in Season 1, an argument that seemed to stem from a mix of sibling rivalry and Randall’s adoptee insecurity.

As the show progressed, we’d learn that the animosity between them only grew upon Jack’s death as Kevin went off to New York and then Los Angeles to pursue acting, and Randall stayed behind.

While Randall felt that Kevin escaped responsibility, Kevin felt that Randall had a savior complex.

Although all seemed well between them following their Season 1 marathon of The Manny, the truth is they just pushed much deeper feelings down that wouldn’t resurface until Rebecca’s diagnosis.

So how will this conversation end? I’m not quite sure; however, I do think both men are at a point in their lives where they’re finally ready to listen and let go of, as Randall called it, “the bad stuff.” If not, the remainder of Season 5 and Season 6 are going to be an unpleasant ride.

The next episode of This Is Us airs on Tuesday, April 13, at 9/8c on NBC.
