Best new anime on Netflix: No. 4 Record of Ragnarok

Who doesn’t love a show that combines stunning anime with Norse mythology? That’s why we had to include Record of Ragnarok on our list of best new anime to stream on Netflix. Directed by Masao Ōkubo and written by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, the anime is based on a manga series by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui and was adapted as an original net animation (ONA) which premiered on Netflix in June.

As the story goes, every 1,000 years, the Gods’ Council assembles to decide the fate of humanity. After 7 million years of human history, the gods come to the decision that humans are a lost cause and just be destroyed. But the Valkyrie Brunhilde proposes one last chance for humanity to prove their worth and the gods agree to hold the battle of Ragnarok, a tournament where 13 notable humans from across history go up against 13 of the most powerful gods in duels to the death.

Best new anime on Netflix: No. 5 Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop

For those not in the mood to dedicate themselves to a whole series, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop is a great new anime film directed by Kyōhei Ishiguro. This romance story has a similar painted style to The Great Pretender and is as much a source of eye-candy as it is a great story.

Released on Netflix last month in July, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop follows the summer break of two individuals with communication issues–a shy boy with a heart and talent for haiku poems and an internet sensation embarrassed by her braces. When these two kids literally bump into each other in a chance meeting at the mall, a friendship turns to something more as they begin to take comfort in their shared insecurities.
