Each year, the Sundance Film Festival kicks off the year in film. And this year, I will be bringing you all the goods from the festival right here on Hidden Remote.

Attending these types of festivals are dreams come true for me. I will be covering the festival virtually, but the full slate is available online to check out. Last week, they provided a list of over 82 feature-length films and weeding through them to find the ones I didn’t want to miss was hard.

With my writing by now, you know I would go through the list and find some big names, but I wanted to see some of the ones made by those I don’t know. I love a good independent movie and that’s why I love Sundance so much! They give people opportunities that most festivals don’t.

The most anticipated films from the 2022 Sundance Film Festival

Something in The Dirt

The writing/directing combination of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are two of my favorite in the world of Hollywood. Their most recent work in Synchronic was one of my favorite films of 2020. The pair write, direct, and star in the film about two neighbors who witness supernatural events in their LA apartment.

Lucy and Desi

I am on record with my distaste of Being the Ricardos. Upon getting the email that a documentary about one of the most iconic duos in TV history was coming to the festival, I was jumping for joy. I also love that the documentary is being directed by Amy Poehler, who I know will due the pair justice.

Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul

The feature film debut of writer/director Adamma Ebo stars Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall as a husband and wife of a Southern Baptist megachurch that gets rocked with a scandal. You had me at Regina Hall. Honestly, I love her so much. Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya produced the film.

Fresh

We all know the battle of dating apps. The feature film directorial debut of Mimi Cave follows Daisy Edgar-Jones’s struggle to survive her new boyfriend’s (Sebastian Stan) unusual appetite. Stan and Jones together in the same film has me HYPED!

When You Finish Saving the World

We have another written/directorial debut at the festival, but this time, it’s with a name we all know and love, Jesse Eisenberg. I love what he brings to the table with his films and I miss it, but I am interested to see what he delivers in this film.

The movie follows Evelyn and Ziggy, who seek replacements for each other as Evelyn tries to parent teenagers at her shelter. The film stars Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard.

Other notable films that I am excited about, 892 (stars John Boyega and the final film of Michael Kenneth Williams), Cha Cha Real Smooth starring Dakota Johnson and Dual starring Karen Gillan and Aaron Paul.

The Sundance festival takes place on Jan. 20-30, 2022.
