There’s a new DC comics adaptation coming to HBO Max! It’s called DMZ, and it’s based on the comic book series by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchilelli that ran from 2005-2012.

The show, billed as a four episode miniseries, will take viewers to a ravaged New York City now referred to as the DMZ (or demilitarized zone).

Produced by Ava Duvernay‘s Array Filmworks with Warner Bros. Television, DMZ promises to be a chaotic ride and scramble for survival as factions war to lay claim to the resources within the city.

The series will star Rosario Dawson, Benjamin Pratt, and Rutina Wesley to name a few well-beloved stars attached to the project. Here’s what to expect from the show!

DMZ release date: When is it coming to HBO Max?

DMZ premieres Thursday, March 17 on HBO Max. All four episodes of this limited series will be available to stream.

Per Deadline the cast is as follows:

Rosario Dawson as Alma Ortego, a medic who’s in search of her son. The two were separated during the initial evacuation of New York City. She’s determined to find him no matter who she has to go up against to be reunited with her child.

Benjamin Bratt as Parco Delgado, one of the most popular and powerful gang leaders in the DMZ. As charming as he is deadly, Parco is aiming for the crown. He wants the DMZ to be entirely within his control, and he won’t let anyone get in his way.

Juani Feliz as Carmen, a powerful women in the city who is a critical member of Spanish Harlem. She’s also the partner to the most ruthless man in the DMZ.

Freddy Miyares as Skel, Parco’s triggerman. He’s ruthless but also artistically talented. Skel expresses his passion for art through graffiti. It’s his one remaining connection to his humanity, the last piece of his life before survival and power became his main priority.

Rutina Wesley as Athena, a Free States of America operative. She’s calculating, shrewd, and the kind of power broker that exercises her skills without being found out. Athena gets the job done so well no one in the DMZ knows of her existence.

Nora Dunn as Oona. She oversees a commune occupied solely by women as well as the DMZ’s water supply, the most valuable commodity in the city. Her position and influence mark her as a powerful figure in the DMZ.

Rey Gallegos as Cesar, a consigliere (an advisor to a crime syndicate) whose devotion to his gang is the reason behind his drive to secure their authority in the city.

Mamie Gummer as Rose, a medic who works to takes care of the ill and injured. It’s a job that’s made her jaded, one that comes at a cost, but she’s determined to do it.

Henry G. Sanders as Cedric, a man who tells it like it is and whose sole focus is protecting his grandson.

Jade Wu as Susie, a hopeful character whose belief in humanity stems from her past. Susie has seen the worst that humans can do to one another, but it’s outweighed by the good she’s seen when push comes to shove.

Agam Darshi as Franklin, a smuggler who is capable of getting anyone in and out of the city.

Venus Ariel as Nico, a mischievous scavenger with a mouth as filthy as a sailor’s.

Hoon Lee as Wilson.

Jordan Preston Carter as Odi Peerlis.

DMZ synopsis: What is DMZ about?

The official synopsis via Deadline:

"DMZ is set in the near future, when America is embroiled in a bitter civil war, leaving Manhattan a demilitarized zone (DMZ), destroyed and isolated from the rest of the world.It chronicles the harrowing journey of fearless and fierce medic Alma Ortega (Rosario Dawson) to find the son she lost in the evacuation of New York City at the onset of the conflict. Throwing gasoline on the flames of that conflict is Parco Delgado (Benjamin Bratt), the popular, and deadly, leader of one of the most powerful gangs in the DMZ. He wants to rule this new world and will stop at nothing to secure that outcome.The drama will examine the stark political and cultural divide in American society, where Alma must contend with the gangs, militias, demagogues and warlords that control this lawless no man’s land. In doing so, she becomes the unlikely source of what everyone there has lost…hope."
