Getting into the Top 24 is no easy feat. American Idol contestants work very hard to get to that point, and then it only gets more challenging as the aspiring singers move through each round in the competition.

Judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie are the ones who picked the Top 24, but moving forward it’s up to America to crown the next American Idol. On Sunday, the first half of the group performed at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii. The remaining 12 took to the stage Monday night for the chance to move on to the Top 20.

During last night’s broadcast, American Idol host Ryan Seacrest interrupted to make a surprising announcement about one of the contestants.

Why did Kenedi Anderson leave?

Seacrest announced that 17-year-old contestant Kenedi Anderson had left the show for “personal reasons.” The talented singer also confirmed the news on her Instagram page. The episode still aired Anderson’s performance. She received a standing ovation from the judges for her performance of Christina Perri’s “Human.” As a massive Christina Perri fan, I can say she definitely knocked it out of the park! She even got a good luck FaceTime call from Christina Perri herself!

But afterwards, Seacrest announced “since we taped these shows in Hawaii earlier, Kenedi has decided to withdraw from our show for personal reasons. We send her well wishes.”

We met the stunning talent when she first auditioned with a unique version of “Applause” by Lady Gaga. The impressive take on the song definitely caught our attention, as well as the judges’. She was one of three Platinum Ticket winners this season.

Her exit has come as a huge surprise for fans as she was expected to make it very far. I certainly thought so. In Anderson’s audition Perry said “she was born to be a star,” and we definitely agree! We wish Anderson the best and I’m very hopeful when the time is right, we will see this star shine once more.

American Idol airs Sunday and Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, and episodes are available to stream on Hulu the next day they air.
