Moon Knight episode 3 excels as Oscar Isaac shines

Moon Knight episode 3, “The Friendly Type,” has aired and it’s left us with a whirlwind of possibilities. The creators of this show continue to expand upon the troubles associated with being Steven Grant and Marc Spector. Not only do we wonder where Oscar Isaac’s characters are taking us but now we must wonder if this season will lead to many more things to come, including more than one season.

Arthur Harrow also pops up on screen multiple times in this episode, highlighting Ethan Hawke’s grasp on a character’s ability to navigate evil with words. Harrow is able to outmaneuver Marc with a legion of supporters while his understanding of Khonshu lets him outwit the other gods. Despite being brought to a secret chamber for his attempts to raise Ammit–a goddess who can wipe out evil before it can be created–Harrow leans into Marc being “deeply troubled” and he escapes judgment.

The entirety of Moon Knight episode 3 highlights the great lengths Marc must go to in order to stop Harrow from raising Ammit. He even gives up control to Steven. The differences between Steven and Marc are quite striking which means Isaac’s dramatic performance feels worthy of some accolades through just three episodes.

Marc is not only fighting a horde of Ammit’s supporters, he’s also battling inner demons who take over at a moment’s notice. He’s racing against time with an evildoer who’s willing to sacrifice anyone who stands in his way. Moon Knight is exciting to watch and continues to be unlike any other Marvel TV show.

Moon Knight episode 3 highlights the power is in Oscar Isaac’s hands

Isaac is Moon Knight. Yes, he’s playing Marc Spector and Steven Grant but this role will be forever his. Whenever a fan thinks of this character, Isaac will be who they think of. Much like other roles we’ve come to love in the MCU, Isaac has solidified himself as another incredible lead.

Moon Knight episode 3 gives us a variety of sequences where Isaac must bounce back and forth between the characters Marc and Steven, and possibly one more. Yes, that’s right. There might be another personality buried deep within their shared body. As we see Marc navigate a fight scene to try and gain information on Ammit’s tomb, we learn everything is not what it seems.

Marc and Steven are confused about the bloody circumstances they find themselves in as they accuse one another of the rising body count. It’s a fun realization for fans to know something’s amiss without it being fully fleshed out onscreen yet. Much like Loki searching for another version of himself in his Disney+ series, there was a sense that something unique was going to form.

Speaking of Loki, we saw him and Sylvie bond over the course of his series, and we’re getting similar glimpses of Marc and Layla as their relationship becomes untangled and then tangled again. Despite Marc disappearing from Layla’s life for months, they’re still able to have an intimate moment on a boat ride. Although this moment is brief, it’s clear there is a deep connection between these two characters.

Isaac’s display of bouncing between multiple roles is exceptional, including the struggles associated with being controlled by Khonshu. On top of his phenomenal performance, the surrounding storyline is presenting us with what a losing battle might look like. Marc Spector loses an important artifact to Harrow. He can’t stop him from finding the tomb’s location. Plus, in trying to find the location with Layla, Khonshu is bound to stone.

Does this mean our new favorite superhero won’t be able to summon the suit anymore? Did he lose his powers? Will he have to excel at being a superhero a la Tony Stark in Iron Man 3 when Stark had to fight without a suit?

Great television is being had in Moon Knight episode 3 and this entire series keeps building to where we’ll want more Oscar Isaac in this role when it’s all said and done. Okay, now, let’s get #MoreMoonKnight trending, please.
