In Moon Knight episode 4, aptly titled “The Tomb,” Layla and Steven’s work looking for Ammit’s burial site pays off.

Through a risky move by Khonshu, which ultimately gets him imprisoned by the Ennead, the two were able to track down the tomb where Arthur Harrow and the rest of the goddess’ acolytes are trying to find her.

Unfortunately, however, it’s not just Layla, Steven, and Ammit’s followers wandering the site. When Steven figures out how to navigate the tomb’s maze, he and Layla walk into a room where blood is splattered on the floor. Clearly bodies have been dragged around in the room and whoever, or whatever, is harming people hasn’t left the tomb.

The two encounter the being killing Ammit’s acolytes and just escape with their lives before it can lay them on the altar and remove their organs just like it did with the poor man it had caught in its clutches moments prior.

What’s attacking everyone in the pharaoh’s tomb? Based on Layla’s findings in the room, it seems to be that one or more Heka priests have been awakened by the intrusion into Alexander the Great’s final resting place.

Moon Knight: What is a Heka priest?

Heka priests are doctors and healers, but their title derives from a term that translates to “magic” or “magical powers,” according to Britannica. In Moon Knight, the priests that defend the tomb had been buried alongside Alexander to ensure that he wouldn’t be disturbed in the afterlife and neither would the tomb itself.

Driven by duty in the series, the priests disembowel their victims. It’s likely that they are performing the process of mummification and readying the body to be buried. Granted, their victims are alive as they do this. However, it’s unclear what the purpose is.

Are the heka priests creating more guards? Do they plan to use the organs they harvest since they are storing them in jars? We may never know. But what is obvious, is that great magical lengths have been gone to in order to protect the tomb and what is inside it, Ammit’s ushabti. She was meant to remain imprisoned but that may not be the case for long.
