Acclaimed filmmaker Ti West is back and better than ever with his 2022 horror movie X. The A24 flick received rave reviews since its SXSW premiere, and we’re happy to report the story’s not over yet. As revealed in the post-credits scene, there is a prequel in the works titled Pearl. Fans of the genre cannot wait to see what the next movie unfolds.

If you haven’t checked out X yet, it follows a group of amateur porn filmmakers who rent out a house in rural Texas to shoot their project. Mia Goth stars as Maxine, a star in the making who’s determined to create a better life for herself. Though the group is able to shoot their movie, things quickly go awry when the owners of the property get involved. X is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year, if not the best!

To find out all the information available about the prequel, Pearl, read on!

Pearl (X prequel) release date

As of July 2022, we have the release date for Pearl! You can expect the prequel to hit theaters on September 16, 2022. That’s not long from now, so mark your calendars for what’s bound to be a movie you won’t want to miss!

According to the Los Angeles Times, X and Pearl were filmed back to back in New Zealand, and Screen Rant reports that Pearl entered post-production in March 2022. Because of that, it’s not surprising the prequel is releasing the same year the original movie came out. Mid-September is also around the time that the spooky season begins, so Pearl will be a nice treat as we all start getting into the Halloween spirit.

Fans are so happy we don’t have to wait until 2023 to see Pearl.

Pearl (X prequel) filming

As mentioned, Pearl has already been filmed. While talking about the decision to make both movies back to back, West told the Los Angeles Times:

"“Because we were in New Zealand where it was safe, and we had an amazing crew and we were building all this stuff. Coming from TV I thought, ‘so much is amortized, it would be a shame not to…’ But it was a long shot.”"

West continued with:

"“It was really just betting on, ‘Well, if we write a good script, why would they say no?’ We joked that the most A24 thing we could do with this movie is make two of them. For a studio that is consistently making challenging, progressively interesting, filmmaker-driven [projects], making two movies at the same time fell into the umbrella of what’s so cool about what they’re doing.”"

Pearl (X prequel) cast

The main cast member of Pearl is Mia Goth. In case you missed it, Goth returns to play the character of Pearl, the old woman from X. It’s an interesting casting choice to have the actress play two different characters, but I really love it! The 28-year-old has already proven herself to be a fantastic talent in front of the camera, having appeared in movies like High Life, Suspiria, and Nymphomaniac: Vol. II.

While talking to Fangoria, West said of working with Goth:

"“I think she understood the duality of the two different characters, she got what the parallels were between them, and she understood what the vibe differences were, too. Mia really understood the contrast of it all and she just was raring to go.”"

Now that we’re inching closer to the release date for Pearl, IMDb has a few additional cast members listed, though we don’t have descriptions of the characters they are playing yet. They are as follows:

  • David Corenswet
  • Tandi Wright
  • Matthew Sunderland
  • Emma Jenkins-Purro

Pearl (X prequel) plot synopsis

Pearl takes place in 1918 and will follow the titular character’s storyline. In X, Pearl is a very old, fragile woman who misses her younger years. She’s envious of Maxine and her friends who are able to run around in skimpy clothing and have sex whenever they want. This jealousy and anger turns to insanity as Pearl goes on a murder spree.

By the looks of the Pearl trailer, we’ll get to see the character as a young woman living on a farm with her family. But of course, not everything is as pleasant and peaceful as it seems. The trailer promises a lot more gore and disturbing plot points.

The Los Angeles Times describes the Pearl plot as:

"“The second film takes place decades earlier and will see Goth diving deeper into the backstory of Pearl as a young woman circa World War I.”"

Pearl (X prequel) trailer

As I stated earlier, a Pearl teaser showed during the post-credits scene for X. Now, a full-length trailer has been released and viewers are shook by all the craziness that it teases! Check it out below.

Pearl looks absolutely bonkers! I’m getting serious Midsommar and The Wicker Man vibes! The prequel might just be even better than the original movie.
