It’s almost time to watch the first episode of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel. What is the series going to be about?

The time has come to learn a little more about the Targaryen dynasty. House of the Dragon premieres on Sunday, and it’s the Game of Thrones prequel we need. Not only do we learn more about a dynasty that covered 300 years in the universe, but we also get to see more dragons! Who doesn’t love more dragons?

The series is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which covers the 300 years of Targaryens. However, this novel reads more of a series of short stories—a collection of tales written by the maesters about the kings and queens with the three-headed dragon sigil.

One of those stories is about King Viserys, his daughter Princess Rhaenyra, and the Targaryen civil war. That’s the story we need to look at to understand House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon synopsis

The series will pick up around 200 years before Daenerys brought dragons back to Westeros. King Viserys I has named his daughter as heir of the Iron Throne. That doesn’t go down well with everyone. Westeros hasn’t had a queen in her own right.

Sure, Westeros has known queens rule. Aegon ruled with his two sisters. The two women proved their abilities, but there has always been a king. When Aegon died, it was his son who became king rather than one of his wives taking over.

Naming Rhaenyra as Viserys’s heir means civil war. Yes, there are factions loyal to her, but there are factions loyal to the men with stronger claims simply because they are men. How will it all play out? Will Rhaenyra get the chance to prove she can rule, or will she find herself on the run to protect her life?
