Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. hit theaters on Sept. 2 and if this is your first time hearing about this film, you’re in for one mega bumpy ride.

The movie is a satirical comedy drama about a scandal that shut down an Atlanta mega-church led by Lee Childs and his first lady, Trinitie Childs. The film is shot like a film within a film as an unseen film producer is documenting the “comeback” of the Childs and re-opening of their pastoral palace.

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. was written, directed, and produced by Adamma Ebo, who also made the 2018 short that the movie was based on. The story is actually based off of true events that happened at an Atlanta-based megachurch back in 2010 and made headlines as well.

The movie stars Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) as Lee Childs, Regina Hall (Nine Perfect Strangers) as Trinitie Childs, Nicole Baharie (Little Fires Everywhere) as Shakura Sumpter, and Conphidance (Bob Hearts Abishola) as Keon Sumpter. The film was produced by Nope star Daniel Kaluuya and executive produced by comedian and filmmaker Jordan Peele.

In this post, we give you some more details on Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul to help you decide if you should skip or not skip.

Is Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. worth watching in theaters?

The movie is made to satirize the misgivings of the southern black church. Those who are familiar with the environment of such may be uncomfortable in their viewing as this movie is based in shedding light on tough issues that plague the church but also slightly mocking the long-held traditions and events that happen in church services.

If you’re a fan of Brown or Hall’s work, you’ll enjoy watching them step into the skin of these funny but flawed characters. Watching this movie made me think about other movies with religious overtones but dealt with hard issues similarly using comedic dialogue as a tactic to skirt past harsh critics.

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. is a film that makes you think while watching. There are some laugh-out-loud moments which are coupled with hard-to-watch scenes but that’s why it’s important to familiarize yourself with the details of the actual scandal before viewing so you have more context. Or you could be like me and go in blind and have no idea what the movie entails other than it’s advertised premise. It’s definitely worth the watch in-theaters if you so choose and I recommend going with a friend as well.

How long is Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul?

The movie has a runtime of 102 minutes (1 hour and 42 minutes). That might be a little lengthy for some but for others, it’s just right. The runtime is fitting for this type of film, especially due to the meatier moments that are saved until the end. However, I do think a couple of minutes could’ve been shaved off to get the film down to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

It’s definitely a movie where you don’t want to miss any of the scenes or you won’t get a full understanding of what’s happening internally and externally between the lead characters. So, if you think you’re going to need a bathroom break, I suggest skipping the soda before sitting down to watch this movie in theaters.
