Is Freema Agyeman leaving New Amsterdam? The show’s season 4 finale seemed to suggest Helen could be leaving but should fans actually be worried?

Across the first four seasons of New Amsterdam, there have been several fake-out storylines that had fans questioning whether a fan favorite character was leaving. This includes the sixteenth episode of season 4, “All Night Long,” when the New Amsterdam team decided to head out for a night of drinking and karaoke together. What started as a fun night out with our favorite New Amsterdam staff members quickly took a series of dark and unexpected turns that left the lives of several members of the show hanging in the balance.

Among those whose future came into question was Dr. Sharpe, who was one of five staff members who failed to show up to work the morning after their night out on the town. As the episode came to a close, we saw Helen unconscious on the floor in left fans wondering if she was leaving the show only for her to be okay and stick around for the remainder of the season.

However, Helen’s decision to ghost Max on their wedding night in the season 4 finale felt different than past storylines which has left many fans wondering if Helen’s time on the show could truly be coming to an end this time around.

Is Helen leaving New Amsterdam?

New Amsterdam has surprised fans with unexpected exits before and, sadly, Freema Agyeman is about to join the list of shocking exits. That’s right, Agyeman will not be returning for the show’s final season to reprise her role as Dr. Helen Sharpe.

As New Amsterdam prepares to wrap up, the series will do so without Agyeman who announced her exit from the show this summer — much to the surprise of fans.

"“Dearest Dam Fam, First off I would like to say a huge heartfelt THANK YOU for your unending, dedicated and deliciously ferocious support! I feel very fortunate to have connected with so many of you, while rolling around in the skin of Ms. Helen Sharpe, and witness every ebb and flow of your emotional investment in her. What a ride!” Agyeman wrote in an emotional farewell message.“Thank you for being on it with me. She has meant so much to me, but the time has come for me to hang up her white coat, as I officially share the news that I will not be returning for the final season of New Amsterdam.”"

Agyeman’s departure will leave a huge hole in the show’s final season and it’s definitely a shame that Sharpe will not be a part of New Amsterdam‘s farewell season. And it’s also important to note the show has not ruled out one final appearance before the show’s run comes to an end.

New Amsterdam airs Tuesday nights at 10/9c on NBC, and episodes are available to stream on Peacock the next day they air.
