Emancipation Apple TV+ release date, cast, teaser trailer, and more

A new Apple Original film starring Will Smith is coming later this year. Emancipation is inspired by a true story.

The movie is directed by Antoine Fuqua, with a script from William N. Collage. Smith also produces the film alongside Jon Mone, Joey McFarland, and Todd Black. James Lassiter, Heather Washington, Cliff Roberts, Glen Basner and Scott Greenberg serve as executive producers.

The production had its first screening at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 51st Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., hosted with the NAACP. Fuqua, Smith, and curator of American Slavery at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture Mary Elliott participated in a conversation about the film at the event.

Emancipation Apple TV+ release date

The historical action thriller will have a limited theatrical release on Friday, Dec. 2. It will then begin streaming globally Friday, Dec. 9 on Apple TV+.

Emancipation Apple TV+ synopsis

Emancipation tells the triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery relying on his wits, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family, Apple TV+ shares. He has to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom.

The film is inspired by the real-life photos from 1863 of “Whipped Peter” taken during a Union Army medical examination. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping from his enslavers. This contributed to the growing public opposition to slavery.
