The Dune book series may have gotten the film production treatment, but now a prequel to the story is getting television streaming time in HBO Max’s upcoming project, Dune: The Sisterhood.

Diane Ademu-John created the series, and serves as a writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. Alison Schapker also runs the show and takes on EP duties, according to Deadline.

Director, co-writer, and producer of the 2021 Dune film – which starred Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet – has been tapped as an executive producer on this current project, the news outlet reports.

So what can we expect from this prequel series? Dune: The Sisterhood is set 10,000 years before the events of the first film and the ascension of Paul Atreides. The series follows the Harkonnen Sisters, who will combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit, according to the news outlet.

Who stars in Dune: The Sisterhood on HBO Max?

Deadline reports the show stars Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen, Shirley Henderson as Tula Harkonnen, Indira Varma as Empress Natalya, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez, Shalom Brune-Franklin as Mikaela, Faoileann Cunningham as Sister Jen, Aoife Hinds as Sister Emeline, and Chloe Lea as Lila.

Here is the cast list with their character descriptions, per Deadline:

  • Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen
  • Shirley Henderson as Tula Harkonnen
  • Indira Varma as Empress Natalya, a formidable royal who united thousands of worlds in her marriage to Emperor Corirno.
  • Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez, an independent young princess dealing with the pressures of her responsibility as heir to the Golden Lion Throne.
  • Shalom Brune-Franklin as Mikaela, a strong-willed Fremen woman who serves the royal family while longing for a home planet she’s never known.
  • Faoileann Cunningham as Sister Jen, a fierce and unpredictable acolyte in training at the Sisterhood School who rarely reveals her emotional core.
  • Aoife Hinds as Sister Emeline, a zealous acolyte descended from a long line of martyrs who carries fervent religion to her training at the Sisterhood.
  • Chloe Lea as Lila, the youngest acolyte at the Sisterhood School with a deep empathy beyond her years.
  • Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino, a ruler who comes from a great line of war-time emperors. He will be called on to govern and keep the fragile peace in the Imperium.
  • Jade Anouka as Sister Theodosia, a talented and ambitious acolyte who holds a dangerous secret about her past.
  • Chris Mason as Keiran Atreides, a swordmaster who wants to live up to his family name. But that’s interrupted when he forms an unexpected relationship with one of the members of the royal family.
  • Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart, a charismatic soldier who looks to gain the Emperor’s trust at the expense of the Sisterhood.

Valya and Tula Harkonnen are the formidable Harkonnen Sisters who have risen to power in the Sisterhood, a secret organization of women who will go on to become the Bene Gesserit, Deadline reports.

Dune: Part Two, which is a sequel movie to the first, is currently in the works and expected to be released sometime in November 2023.
