What is Dune: The Sisterhood about on HBO Max?

If you’re a fan of the Dune film series, starring Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, then you’ll be happy to know HBO Max is working on a prequel television series, Dune: The Sisterhood. Though the two actors won’t appear in it, we’re still getting more story in the sci-fi universe!

According to Deadline, the series has tapped actors Emily Watson, Shirley Henderson, Indira Varma, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Faoileann Cunningham, Aoife Hinds, Chloe Lea, Mark Strong, Jade Anouka, Chris Mason, and Travis Fimmel.

The upcoming project is based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune, which came out in 2012. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson wrote the book, which is set in the universe created by author Frank Herbert in the first book.

Behind the scenes, Diane Ademu-John serves as creator, writer, co-showrunner and executive producer, with Alison Schapker taking on co-showrunner and executive producing duties, according to Deadline. The news outlet reports Denis Villeneuve, who directed, co-wrote, and produced the first Dune film, is executive producing this time around.

What is Dune: The Sisterhood about on HBO Max?

Deadline reports that Dune: The Sisterhood is set 10,000 years before the events of Dune and the ascension of Paul Atreides. The series follows the Harkonnen Sisters, who will be played by Watson and Henderson. The two siblings will combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the “fabled sect,” the Bene Gesserit, according to the news outlet.

Work on the second film in the franchise, Dune: Part Two, is currently underway. The production is set to be released sometime in November 2023. It will see the return of Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Zendaya as Chani.
