Guinness World Records: Most viewers for a Netflix Original debut – Squid Game

Squid Game was the biggest release in Netflix history. 142 million subscriber households watched the series in its first month after it premiered Sept. 17, 2021. That’s a total of two-thirds of Nextflix’s subscriber base.

The show became a cultural phenomenon as viewers tuned into the nine part survival thriller by Hwang Dong-hyuk, a South Korean filmmaker. In Squid Game, 456 contestants vie for a 45.6 billion won prize, which is the equivalent of 38.8 million dollars, at the risk of their own lives. It’s a game that’s exploitative as each contestant has fallen on financial hardship and must play a series of deadly children’s games in the hopes of climbing out of debt.

In only a month, Squid Game boosted Netflix’s stock-market value to 19 billion dollars. The streamer has had many popular shows but none have yet to reach the heights of this thriller. And still may not for years to come, if ever.

Guiness World Records: Most In-Demand digital original TV show – The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian, the Star Wars franchise’s first live-action series, debuted in Nov. 2019 on Disney+. Fans of this universe, and those new to delving into this galaxy, far, far away, fell in love with Mando and his charge, Baby Yoda, within the first season.

The show’s viewership has only grown since with season 2 bringing in more fans and season 3 being a highly anticipated release especially after Mando and the baby’s appearances in The Book of Boba Fett. Though the beloved nature of this series should come as no surprise around the globe, according to Parrot Analytics, The Mandalorian had a demand 57.6 times greater than the average television show between 2020-2021, making it the most popular online original series.

Given the Star Wars drama’s audience, we wouldn’t be surprised if it keeps breaking records throughout its run on Disney+.

Guinness World Records: Most nominations for a sci-fi film – Dune

Dune, the latest live-action adaptation of the famous book of the same name by Frank Herbert, received 11 BAFTA nominations on Feb. 3, 2022. That’s the most noms that a sci-film has ever gotten. The last movie in this genre to receive that many nominations by an awards committee was Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 sci-fi Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts trying to return to Earth after the destruction of their space shuttle.

Dennis Villeneuve’s film, which takes place in the distant future on the fictional desert planet, Arrakis (otherwise known as Dune), stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides. He, along with his noble house, are thrust into a deadly war for the planet.

Dune has a star-studded cast that includes: Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Chang Chen, David Dastmalchian, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jason Momoa, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgård, and Zendaya.

The film went on to win five of its nominations – Best Original Score, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound and Special Visual Effects, according to Empire.

Guinness World Records: Highest-grossing Disney movie – Avengers: Endgame

It should come as no surprise that Avengers: Endgame is Disney’s highest grossing movie. Coming off of Avengers: Infinity War, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe wanted to know how their favorite superheroes would contend with the aftermath of The Snap.

To the tune of 2.8 billion dollars, moviegoers turned out for Steve Roger’s last time as Captain America in the MCU and bid farewell to Tony Stark. Endgame changed this universe forever and reverberated into the films and television shows that followed.

Guinness World Records: Most Emmy nominations for a comedy debut – Ted Lasso 

Ted Lasso took the world by storm after its debut on Apple TV+ in 2020. Viewers fell in love with Ted, an American football coach hired to revive AFC Richmond, an English Premier League soccer team owned by Rebecca Welton. Heartfelt, funny, and endearing, the show hooked its audience in ten episodes.

In 2021, Ted Lasso received 20 Emmy nominations. The show won seven awards: Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Sound Mixing, Casting, and Single-Camera Picture Editing.
