A new biographical film is headed our way in the summer of 2023. Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy, is coming to cinemas Friday, July 21, 2023!

The movie is produced by Universal Pictures, with popular director Christopher Nolan taking charge behind the cameras as well as writing the script. Producers Emma Thomas and Charles Roven are also part of the behind-the scenes crew.

The film stars Murphy in the titular role as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt as his wife Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer who is a biologist and botanist, Matt Damon as director of the Manhattan Project General Leslie Groves Jr., and Robert Downey Jr. as founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Lewis Strauss.

The cast also includes Florence Pugh as psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie as theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Josh Hartnett as pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence, and Michael Angarano as Robert Serber. Other actors attached to the project that will pop up are Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, and Matthew Modine.

The movie is based on American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a biography written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. Oppenheimer is the theoretical physicist known as the “father of the atomic bomb.” The leader of the Manhattan Project during World War II was behind the first nuclear weapons produced, which were used in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The trailer reveals we’re going to see the origins of this project and the making of the weapons.

Bird is an author and columnist who covered the atomic bombings in 1945. His co-author, Sherwin, was a historian who focused on the history of nuclear weapons. He taught at Princeton University, Berkeley, among others.

Oppenheimer will make its theatrical debut July 21, 2023.
