Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, retells the story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and The Manhattan Project — the mission that led to the creation of the first atomic bomb and nuclear weapons in the 1940s during World War II.

The Manhattan Project earned its name because the army offices for the project were in Manhattan, but Oppenheimer and his team choose a remote location in New Mexico called Los Alamos as the site for the creation of weapon and his experiments. Los Alamos was known as “Site Y” in an effort to keep the location secret.

Filming began in February 2022 and production wrapped in May 2022, with post-production starting very quickly after. Produced by Universal Studios, this IMAX-shot epic thriller is already creating buzz with fans because of its latest trailer, talented cast, and authenticity to one of the most extreme events in American history.

But where was the movie filmed? You’ll be interested to know that most of the film’s locations are accurate to real events and places in Robert Oppenheimer’s life. Filming took place in and around Los Alamos, New Mexico on a custom set, as well as in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Oppenheimer’s family home during his time in Los Alamos was also used for the movie.

Because he was a professor at UC Berkley in California from 1929 to 1943, the movie’s production team visually sent the campus back to the 1940s for scenes filmed at the school. Filming on campus took place in May 2022 around the actual building at UC Berkley where he taught classes. Additional scenes were filmed at UC Los Angeles’ campus and around the greater Los Angeles area.

After World War II, Oppenheimer became director of the a school in Princeton, New Jersey, and the movie also filmed scenes on the Princeton University campus, as well as around New Jersey. These are all the locations we know of so far, but it’s clear the film’s creative team worked to secure accurate locations for the film.
