Happy Valley has gripped TV fans in the United Kingdom throughout its initial run on BBC and it has done the same across the world via international broadcasts and streaming. It’s not hard to see why, because truthfully the show is one of the greatest British dramas to ever be produced.

The Sarah Lancashire-led series returned to UK screens this year after a six-year hiatus to air its third series. Debuting on New Year’s Day, it received critical acclaim yet again, proving that the wait was worth it, and that Lancashire, writer Sally Wainwright, and indeed the whole cast, were still at the top of their game.

Is Happy Valley season 4 happening?

If you’re hoping for more of Happy Valley, you’ll probably be sad to know that there won’t be a fourth season. Those who have followed the show since the days that its first two series aired will likely know that creator Sally Wainwright always envisioned Catherine Cawood’s story as a three-season arc.

Moreover, according to Radio Times, at a screening for the series, executive producer Will Johnston confirmed that there were no plans for a fourth season as Sally Wainwright and Sarah Lancashire “completely and rightly feel that you can have too much of a good thing.”

It’s understandable that they want the show to go out strong because every time it has aired a new episode, audiences have been gripped. While Catherine’s job could have allowed the show to follow a procedural format like other crime dramas, the thing that separates Happy Valley from all the others is the strength of its story and how it always revolved around things happening in her life. And there’s also a strength in knowing when to bring the show’s story to an end.
