The Conjuring 4 (Last Rites): Everything we know so far

Just weeks off the news that Warner Bros. will be bringing The Conjuring universe to HBO Max with a brand-new series, we just got confirmation on April 25 of the fourth film’s official title! This is huge news for horror fans who have been looking forward to the next entry in the series starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

At the 2023 CinemaCon event in Las Vegas today, a long list of exciting announcements was made, including a major update about The Conjuring 4. According to Warner Bros’ presentation, the upcoming movie is titled The Conjuring: Last Rites. Spooky! Keep reading to find out everything we know so far about the horror movie.

The Conjuring: Last Rites writer and producers

At this time, it still hasn’t been confirmed who will be directing the next film in the franchise, though we know who will be penning the script. In Oct. 2022 when the movie was first announced, The Hollywood Reporter shared that David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will serve as the writer of the fourth movie. He’s best known for his work on Aquaman, Orphan, Red Riding Hood, and the second and third Conjuring movies.

To be honest, I was very disappointed by The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and hope Last Rites is an improvement writing-wise.

James Wan and Peter Safran will return to the franchise to serve as producers on The Conjuring 4. Many are holding out hope that Wan might direct it as well.

The Conjuring: Last Rites cast

Though we don’t have a full cast list confirmed for Last Rites, we do know for sure that the two big names will return! Wan took to Instagram in Oct. 2022 when the movie was first announced to share that Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will reprise their roles. The series is nothing without the actors playing Lorraine and Ed Warren, so I’m relieved to know they’ll be back.

Will The Conjuring 4 be the last of the series?

Last Rites will mark the fourth movie in the main Conjuring series, leaving fans wondering how much longer we can expect it to go. In an interview with Collider, Wan was asked if Last Rites will be the final installment, and he remained tight-lipped: “We never know. You never know. We’ll see.”

The Conjuring certainly is a staple in modern horror, but if the series goes on for too long, I’d be fearful it’d be overstaying its welcome. Having a well-written, well-directed, total scare-fest of a final movie would be ideal. But who knows if this will be it? We’ll have to keep an eye out for more updates to know for sure.

Now that The Conjuring 4 has a name, we’re hopeful we’ll be getting more news about it soon. It’s probably too late to expect a Halloween 2023 release date considering we haven’t gotten word that they’re filming yet, but perhaps an October 2024 premiere in time for the spooky season could happen.
