With the conclusion of Succession, the highly-coveted 9 p.m. slot on Sunday nights on HBO is now open. The show next to occupy that space is The Idol, the provocative drama series about a rising pop star and her troubled relationship with a cult leader.

Lily-Rose Depp stars as Jocelyn, a pop star needing a rebrand after canceling her tour due to a nervous breakdown. Jocelyn meets Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a self-help guru and leader of a mysterious cult. As the two begin a relationship, Jocelyn’s career begins to take off again as her popularity soars. However, it brings Jocelyn down a path of sex, drugs, and indulgence, forcing her to re-evaluate her newfound success.

Besides Depp and Tesfaye, The Idol’s ensemble cast includes Suzanna Son, Dan Levy, Rachel Sennott, Troye Sivan, Eli Roth, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Moses Sumney, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Jane Adams, Ramsey, Hari Nef, and Hank Azaria.

The Idol is co-created by Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson, the creator of HBO’s popular drama, Euphoria. Levinson directed all episodes of The Idol. The series’ first two episodes premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, and the show received a polarizing reaction, with many critics’ criticizing the show’s sexual content and tone.
