General Hospital fans are going to have to prepare for a cast exit this year. Already the soap has had to say goodbye to Kin Shriner and Haley Pullos has had to temporarily step away from the daytime program due to a DUI charge and pending trial. Now news has broken that Nicholas Alexander Chavez will be making a departure from Port Charles.

The 23 year old actor is known for his role as Spencer Cassadine on the soap. The character is the son of Nikolas Cassadine and Courtney Matthews. Chavez is the 10th person to portray Spencer and made his debut in 2021. His iteration of the character has been a standout as he has won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series in 2022 and is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series this year.

Fans will miss him when he leaves the soap, but why is he exiting? Here’s what we know!

Why is Nicholas Alexander Chavez leaving General Hospital?

Chavez was recently announced to be cast in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix original series Monster for its second outing on the streamer. He’ll be playing one of the Menendez brothers, who are the focus of season 2. Chavez is set to step into the role of Lyle.

The season will follow the story of real life brothers Erik and Lyle Menedez who were convicted of murdering their parents in 1996. They have maintained that their actions were to the emotional, physical, and sexual abuse they endured while being raised by José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez.

Chavez will be leaving General Hospital in order to be a part of the series, however, it’s only temporary. Monster is an anthology. The actor won’t be on the show for more than one season.

When is Nicholas Alexander Chavez’s last episode of General Hospital?

At this time, this is unknown. Due to the writers strike, production on Monster is in limbo. TVLine reports that season 2 isn’t expected to start filming until after the strike.

Will the role of Spencer Cassadine be recast on General Hospital?

Reportedly, the team behind the soap doesn’t intend on recasting Spencer in Chavez’s absence. His character will likely be written out or simply be offscreen while the actor is filming Monster.
