As anyone who has read Red, White and Royal Blue knows, June Claremont-Diaz plays a key role in the story told across Casey McQuiston’s New York Times bestseller.

In the book, June is Alex’s older sister and one-third of the “White House Trio” which consists of June, Alex, and Nora Holleran. Without saying too much for those who haven’t yet read the book, let’s just say that June plays a key role in the book including in more than a few pivotal moments within the book. She’s a focal character across the book and a fan-favorite among readers.

Given June’s impact on the story told within the book, the assumption would be that June would cross over into the live-action adaptation of the book. However, in the build-up to Red, White and Royal Blue‘s release on Prime Video, June has been suspiciously missing from all promotional materials including the movie’s trailer and many social media posts.

This has led many fans to question whether June was by chance cut as part of the creative liberties taken with the source material. So can we expect to see June in RWRB?

Warning: Potential Red, White and Royal Blue Spoilers Ahead

Is June in the RWRB movie?

While June plays a key role in the book, the character does not appear in Prime Video’s Red, White and Royal Blue movie. That’s right, June was cut from the movie adaptation and is not among the film’s ensemble of characters.

June’s exclusion from the film was seemingly confirmed by the official Red, White and Royal Blue Instagram account ahead of the movie’s release.

In a video shared on July 24, fans were introduced to the key members of Alex’s life in a montage that featured his parents, Nora, Amy, and Zahra. Given June is a key member of Alex’s family, if she was included in the movie she would have been featured in the video which introduced audiences to Alex’s “first family.”

It’s disappointing that June was cut from the movie given how incredible a character she is and how big of a role she plays in the book. As for how her exclusion affects the story told in the movie? Fans will just have to tune in to see exactly how June’s absence shakes things up when Red, White and Royal Blue arrives on August 11!

Why isn’t June in the RWRB movie?

Although no direct reason for June’s exclusion from the Red, White and Royal Blue movie has been provided, it is likely that June was cut from the film due to time constraints and creative differences that came with adapting the book into a movie.

In adapting the book, director Matthew López has been candid in discussing the unique challenge that comes with adapting a book into a movie that has a tight runtime and the limits that can lead to some cuts needing to be made.

"“I have a very, very different job than Casey McQuiston did as the author of the novel,” López, told Us Weekly. ”This is obviously no slight to Casey whom I adore and who’s been very integral in the making of this movie. You have the limitations of budget, time, space when you’re making a movie, and time being the most pressing one. What I’ve been saying to people is like, ‘Well, take the number of hours the audiobook lasts and subtract it by two, and that’s what was left out of the movie.’”"

Given how complicated and intricate June’s story is, it’s likely that she was removed from the film’s narrative as part of efforts to tighten the focus and spotlight Henry and Alex’s story in the best possible way.
