What is the series about and who stars in the show?

The show is based on 2022 novel of the same name by author Charmaine Wilkerson. In the late 1960s, runaway bride Covey makes her way to Jamaica, per the synopsis. People think she’s either drowned or “a fugitive on the run for her husband’s murder.” We flashback between that time and 50 years later when a widowed Eleanor Bennett, aka Covey’s new name, dies after her battle with cancer. While staying secretive about her past while alive, she’s ready to share her story with her two kids, Byron and Benny, after death.

The two estranged siblings listen to the stories their mother shares, having recorded them on a flash drive before her passing. The two quickly learn about her “journey from the Caribbean to America,” and the stories “shock her children” as they’re learning way more about their family’s origin and history. And it’s not what they expect. Check out the trailer below for a look at the mystery-filled drama:

The cast includes Mia Isaac in the lead role of Covey, Chipo Chung as older Covey aka Eleanor, Adrienne Warren as Covey’s daughter Benny, Ashley Thomas as Covey’s son Byron, Anthony Mark Barrow as Covey’s first/murdered husband Little Man, Faith Alabi as Pearl, Simon Wan as Lin, Ahmed Elhaj as Gibbs, Jade Eshete as Mathilda, Karise Yansen as Elly, Glynn Turman as Mr. Mitch, and Lashay Anderson as Bunny.

Black Cake premieres its eight-episode season Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023 with the first three episodes on Hulu. Installments will be released weekly until the finale on Dec. 6.
