Black Cake filming locations: Was Black Cake really filmed in Jamaica and California?

Mystery drama Black Cake has been a welcome addition to Hulu and our watch lists! The show premiered on Nov. 1, 2023 and new episodes are released weekly until the finale on Dec. 6. The story takes place in many countries and features beautiful scenery. So where was the series filmed?

Black Cake did really film in California, and partly in Jamaica. Though most of the filming actually took place in Wales, production designer Awel Jones shares with House Beautiful. Other filming locations included England and partly in Italy.  So in which cities did production set up shop exactly? Are there any spots you can visit? We’ve got the answer for you below!

Breaking down the Black Cake filming locations

Filming in Wales

Wales was the main filming location for the show, which takes place in Jamaica, Italy, Scotland, England, and California. Specifically the capital of the country – Cardiff. Most of the work there was done in studio at the Great Point Seren Studios, including replicating a Jamaica beach inside, per Jones. Here’s what Jones told the outlet:

"We actually put 80 tons of sand in the studio and created a little bit of an outer edge to it, and then put a green screen where the sea would’ve been."

One real-life spot production did use was the St. Cadoc’s Hospital in Wales. You’ll notice that cameras captured the outside, as well as the interior of the building.

Filming in England

According to House Beautiful, the cities of Bristol and London in England were also used for certain shots. Those were “backdrops of buildings and streets” used throughout the series. The town of Bridgwater and county of Somerset were also used to portray London, per Screen Rant. The real-life Kings Square and Castle Street are spots that were transformed, and you can visit. The outlet shares that Frog Lane in Bristol City Centre was also used.

Filming in California and Jamaica

With the majority of the story taking place in Jamaica and California, it’s no surprise you’re here and wondering whether the show actually set up shop in the country and state. While Jamaica and California did not serve as the main filming locations, cameras were still rolling in both locations. House Beautiful shares that a real house in Los Angeles served as Covey’s home in the U.S. Though the interior shots took place on sets in LA.

Director Natalia Leite did an interview with Screen Rant and confirmed that some of the scenes we see were shot in Jamaica, specifically those in the water. Here’s what she told the outlet about shooting there:

"[It was] very challenging. Sometimes you have the budget to go to a tank in a controlled environment, but we were actually in Jamaica in the water, and some of the cast members had very limited experience in the ocean swimming."
