Lisa Kudrow thanks Matthew Perry for their time together in emotional tribute
“My Eyes, My Eyes!” Unfortunately, this hilarious Phoebe line from Friends does not apply to a funny moment here. It’s truly because us fans can’t stop crying following the sudden death of Matthew Perry. I can’t even imagine how those closest to him, including his former co-stars, are feeling. And now, all of the main Friends cast members have paid tribute to Matthew Perry with Lisa Kudrow remembering her dear friend.
On Nov. 15, 2023, the Phoebe actress shared an emotional tribute to Perry, who was found dead in a hot tub at the age of 54. The sad day was Oct. 28, 2023, and medical examiners are still working to figure out the reason behind his passing. Since then, the show’s creators, guest stars, and main cast members have paid tribute to Perry. And Kudrow is the latest one to do so. We shared her message, and the Instagram post below:
"Shot the pilot, “Friends Like Us,” got picked up then immediately, we were at the NBC Upfronts. Then…You suggested we play poker AND made it so much fun while we initially bonded. Thank you for that. Thank you for making me laugh so hard at something you said, that my muscles ached, and tears poured down my face EVERY DAY.Thank you for your open heart in a six way relationship that required compromise. And a lot of “talking.” Thank you for showing up at work when you weren’t well and then, being completely brilliant. Thank you for the best 10 years a person gets to have.Thank you for trusting me.Thank you for all I learned about GRACE and LOVE through knowing you.Thank you for the time I got to have with you, Matthew."
Kudrow accompanied the emotional and heartfelt words with a photo of her and Perry at the NBC Upfronts she refers to in her post. The two are seen celebrating when Friends was officially picked up, and promoting it. There’s so many thoughts that go through our minds when a loved one passes, and there’s so many things we want to thank them for that we may not have gotten the chance to say when they were around. And so like Matt LeBlanc, Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer, and Jennifer Aniston’s touching tributes, Kudrow’s definitely hits home.
On Oct. 31, just two days after news came out of Perry’s passing, the core Friends cast released a joint statement to People. Though it’s rightfully taken them time to process their emotions and be able to put into words their individual tributes to their lost friend. We shared that joint statement below:
"We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."
In Perry’s 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing, the Chandler actor was very open about his struggles with addiction that went on for years. Though eventually he got to a place where he was clean, and made it to the other side. While we’ll of course remember him for his iconically hilarious role as Chandler, Perry wanted to also be remembered as someone who helped people going through his same struggles. And that’s the least we can do as fans to honor his memory.
