Is Teddy’s Christmas based on a book? Well, sort of
A new, sweet, and family-friendly Christmas movie is here just in time for the holiday season! Grab your kids and head on over to theaters now where Teddy’s Christmas is playing on the big screens. The Norwegian movie made its debut in the U.S. on Dec. 1, 2023, and you might be wondering whether the story is based on a book.
Teddy’s Christmas is not based on a book, but it is an adaptation of a song. Per Deadline, the tune it’s based on is called “Teddybjørnens Vise,” and is written by Alf Prøysen. The talented Norwegian songwriter, musician, author, poet, and playwright was one of the most impactful and important personalities in the country during the 20th century. Give it a listen below:
So it’s not really surprising that his work has been adapted for the big screen, with director Andrea Eckerbom at the helm! The writers of the film that brought the song to life in movie form are Harald Rosenløw Eeg and Lars Gudmestad. Plus, Teddy’s Christmas is part of a holiday trilogy of films, with the other two also based on Prøysen’s work. Those productions are Santa Swap Merry Christmas Mr Andersen and Forgotten Christmas.
Inspiration for shows and movies today come from so many places, and it’s truly amazing to see what can be adapted into a full-blown story! From books, games, songs, and even card games, there’s talent and inspiration all around us. And I just love seeing the different adaptations come to life the way they do. Especially when it’s a holiday film!
Originally a Norwegian film, Teddy’s Christmas has been dubbed in English for those of us in the U.S. And the one voicing the fluffy titular character himself is Zachary Levi! The cast also includes Marte Klerck-Nilssen, Jan Gunnar Røise, Nader Khademi, and Mariann Hole.
The live-action/CGI movie is centered around 8-year-old Mariann who sees something she can’t believe while out in the Christmas market in town – “the most adorable stuffed teddy bear” that moved his head and sneezed, per the synopsis. He immediately catches her attention, but someone else wins the fluffy animal at the carnival game booth. But Teddy won’t give up! He and his hedgehog friend Bolla go on a journey to get back to Mariann and “discover the true importance of family and friendship.” Check out the trailer below:
