High Potential is one of the most popular crime shows on television right now, and for good reason. There is a lot to love about the show, from its quirky female lead to the unorthodox methods the team uses to solve crimes. And though it's only had two seasons, High Potential has carved out a lane for itself that keeps us coming back for more.
Season 2 of High Potential was fun, thrilling, and left us on the edge of our seats. In essence, it gave us everything we loved about the show, particularly its eccentric, comedic side. But while good-natured wit is one of the show's biggest strengths, the latest season also leaned into some darker moments. Several episodes tugged at our heartstrings, while others left us in full-blown tears.
Here are three episodes from season 2 that completely broke our hearts.
3. "The Faust and the Furious" (season 2, episode 12)
In "The Faust and the Furious," Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) faced deeply personal decisions while trying to arrange his father's headstone. He initially thought that his mother had been reckless with his dad's life insurance money but discovered that she had essentially been scammed. As he worked to make things right, Oz was forced to confront his own grief and anger over his father's death.
"The Faust and the Furious" is one of season 2's best episodes. First, it gave us some important background on Oz, who has a really interesting backstory. We don't always see him in the spotlight, so it was nice to get context on the experiences and values that have shaped who he is.
But the episode also featured a beautiful moment between Morgan and Karadec. When the two were trapped in a victim's meditation room, which also happened to be the same place he was killed, Morgan started having a panic attack. As a single mom, she thought about her kids losing her and what that would do to each of them. But like a true partner, Karadec came to her rescue, reassuring her both physically and mentally that they would be ok and that he was with her.
While the scene had romantic potential, the moment between Morgan and Karadec was special because it showed how far they had come as partners. They've always had a bit of a Tom-and-Jerry dynamic, but deep down, they care deeply for one another. The moment they shared in "The Faust and the Furious" showed that they are not just partners now; they're friends.
2. "If You Come for the Queen" (season 2, episode 14)
In "If You Come for the Queen," Daphne (Javicia Leslie) led an investigation into the attempted murder of her mentor and friend. As she worked to unravel what led to the incident, Daphne reflected on her career and what the future would look like for her.
"If You Come for the Queen" is High Potential's first Daphne-centric episode, and we loved every minute. The episode has so many interesting layers. It's about mentorship and legacy, but also about free expression and ambition. Daphne hesitated to take the sergeant's exam because Black and Brown female officers are often overlooked for high-ranking positions, no matter how hard they work. But eventually, she realized that she shouldn't dim her light to make other people comfortable.
It was great to see the show tackle what it means for Daphne to be a young, Black female officer. Her perspective is unique and no less important than her colleagues'. It deserves to be spotlighted now and then. Hopefully, the show will also continue to flesh out Daphne's dynamic with Ava (Amirah J). She could be a great mentor for Ava, who's still finding herself and her place in the world.
1. "Family Tree" (season 2, episode 18)
In the season 2 finale, titled "Family Tree," Karedec and Morgan investigated a case involving Karedec's girlfriend, Lucia. As things escalated, the two were forced to reconsider the direction their relationship was going. Meanwhile, Wagner found himself in a life-or-death situation.
Say what you will about Lucia and Karedec, it was sad to see the relationship end the way it did. Lucia being involved in criminal activity came out of nowhere, and the writers definitely could have come up with a better way to write the character off. It's also a shame that we won't get to see Susan Kelechi Watson on our screens every week. ABC refusing to take advantage of her talent by quickly getting rid of her characters (RIP Cricket Dawson) will always be baffling. However, the relationship ending was most likely inevitable given the slow burn between Karadec and Morgan.
Lucia and Karedec's breakup wasn't the only emotional moment in the finale. "Family Tree" also gave us a shocking cliffhanger with Wagner's shooting. We'd grown to like the character over season 2, but judging by his state at the end of the episode, it's clear that he may not make it out alive.
That said, we're looking forward to seeing the fallout from Wagner's attack and the new adventures that await the High Potential team in season 3!
