In "Picture Day," the Abbott Elementary teachers are caught off guard when Principal Ava forgets to inform them that they are having their pictures taken (on a particularly rainy day). Things get worse when the group realizes that they can't reschedule and are forced to take pictures looking wet and disheveled. As a result, they end up overediting their photos to compensate for the lack of preparation.
Picture day is a staple of American school culture, a day when everyone wants to look their best. Hence, it serves as a great setup for a chaotic sitcom episode. From Gregory's inability to smile like a normal person to Barbara's excessive airbrushing, the episode consistently delivers laughs throughout its 20 minutes of airtime.
4. Miami
In "Miami," the Abbott crew (minus Mr. Johnson) travels to Miami for PECSA weekend, and excitement is in the air as the group looks forward to spending time with significant others and enjoying all the city has to offer. That is, until rumors start circulating that the school district may be closing several schools, including Abbott Elementary. As the news of their impending unemployment sinks in, the group decides to let loose and have one last hoorah before facing some hard truths.
"Miami" is not all laughs. It has some sentimental moments as the Abbott crew wrestles with losing their jobs and what life might look like for them in the coming months. However, it's nice to see the group let loose at the end of the episode. Eventually, they stop worrying and have a good time, regardless of any potential consequences.
There's also something about the thought of Barbara crowdsurfing that just brings a smile to one's face.
3. Safety Day
In "Safety Day," the district unexpectedly forces Abbott Elementary to participate in a merged safety campaign to save money. However, chaos descends quickly as Jacob becomes concerned about an ex-coworker running for liaison representative, Melissa tries to break up with her firefighter boyfriend, and Gregory takes a code of silence.
Abbott Elementary has become known for its over-the-top school safety demonstrations, and the ones featured in this episode do not disappoint. The kids always end up confused and scared, and it's unclear whether anyone truly learns something. But that's the beauty of these episodes. They are guaranteed chaos and fun.
2. Mall Part 2: Questions and Concerns
After pipes burst at Abbott Elementary, causing thousands of dollars in flood damage, the district moves the school to an abandoned mall. As a result, in "Mall Part 2: Questions and Concerns," the staff tries to find creative ways to navigate their uncomfortable but temporary placement. Meanwhile, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) expresses concerns about the lack of stability and safety provided at the new location.
One of the funniest parts of this episode is Jacob and Barbara's side quest. After Morton invites Melissa to trivia night, Jacob and Barbara become convinced that he's trying to poach her for his own friend group. So, to confirm their suspicions, they go undercover at trivia night and hear Morton bad-mouthing them to Melissa.
Morton is the character everyone loves to hate. He's pretentious and a bit of an elitist, but he always ends up doing or saying something so ridiculous you can't help but laugh. Ultimately, he brings just the right amount of villainy to Abbott Elementary to make it fun without overdoing it.
1. Ballgame
In "Ballgame," the Abbott crew heads to Citizens Bank Field for Teacher Appreciation Week at the Philadelphia Phillies game. As Ava and O'Shon vie for the Kiss Cam, Gregory obsesses over statistics, and Melissa and Jacob have an eating contest.
"Ballgame" is not only the funniest episode of season 5 but generally one of Abbott Elementary's best episodes. The background extras shine with their witty one-liners and dramatic facial expressions. It also helps that the episode was filmed at an actual Phillies game, creating a palpable sense of excitement among both the cast and fans alike.
The cherry on top? The game reactions from the Abbott Elementary cast are real, as Phillies hitter Kyle Schwarber hit four home runs while the episode was being filmed.
