Abbot Elementary probably isn't going to win an Emmy for Best Comedy (But here's why the sitcom should)

Abbott Elementary is one of the best comedies, not just on the air right now, but ever made! Its use of humor while tackling real issues some people face in the workforce, in particular teachers and schools of course, just make it a unique and fun watch. With the Emmys 2024 coming up, we're thinking about our favorite show and its chances of winning.

The sitcom deserves to finally take home Best Comedy this year at the Emmys because it's already been snubbed one too many times; the show is innovative and interesting, has great comedic timing; and the ensemble cast is one of the best on TV. Like, seriously. Every actor was cast in their role so perfectly. I think it's also a relatable show for many people, while staying lighthearted and and amusing. If I had a vote at the Emmys, Abbott would definitely earn mine!

Unfortunately, I don't think Abbott Elementary is going to win in the Best Comedy category though. This year, it's garnered a total of six nominations. And the reason behind me thinking it's not going to win isn't because I don't think it's good. It's excellent and the ABC series deserves to take home all the accolades! It's because The Bear is nominated in the same category. And it's likely the FX show will beat Abbott out, just like last year.

Now I think The Bear is a great and strong show as well. It's just frustrating that all the awards shows continue to nominate the series under the comedy umbrella instead of Best Drama. Because if you've watched it, you know that it's very much more of a drama than comedy. With The Bear being nominated in the comedy category, it usually takes home all the wins and leaves the other shows - including Abbott Elementary - empty handed. And it's just not fair.

These awards show, including the Emmys, need to start putting it in the drama category where the series fits so much better. In the last couple of years, Abbott Elementary has been nominated for Best Comedy and hasn't won even though I think the sitcom more than deserves it. In 2022, the show was beat out by Ted Lasso, then The Bear the following year.

I mean, I don't want to be a negative Nancy. I'll try to keep my hopes up and optimism high. Perhaps this year is the year where some changes happen. Because truly, Abbott Elementary does not get as much recognition as it deserves from these awards shows. But then again, that' a pretty common theme. There's snubs all the time!

• Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series - Randall Einhorn
• Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series - Quinta Brunson

Abbott Elementary season 4 premieres Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024 on ABC. The Emmys 2024 ceremony airs Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024 starting at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Be sure not to miss it and at least we can cheer the cast from home!
