Grey’s Anatomy fans have quite a long month ahead of them. Much to the surprise of fans, the promo for Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 17, revealed that ABC’s long-running medical drama would be heading into yet another multi-week break. It was bad enough knowing that we wouldn’t get a new episode of Grey’s until the final Thursday of April, but somehow that isn’t even the worst part of this break.
You see, not only will ABC not be airing any new episodes of season 22 during that time, but the network has pulled Grey’s Anatomy from the schedule entirely. You read that correctly; there will be literally no episodes of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday nights with the show being benched entirely during this three-week break.
So why is ABC not only holding the next new episode of Grey’s Anatomy for three weeks but also keeping the show off the schedule with not a single rerun planned during this break?
Let’s answer the first part of this question first. While Grey’s Anatomy used to produce 22-27 episodes in a single season, the show’s episode counts have gradually decreased over the years, with the most recent seasons consisting of only 18 episodes. This is the case with season 22.
On April 2, ABC aired episode 16, which meant that there are only two episodes left in the season. With ABC scheduling the season finale for May 7, this meant a break would be needed of some kind before the finale to bridge the five-week span of time between episode 16’s release and the season finale. Rather than airing episode 17 right away and making fans wait weeks for the finale, ABC decided to schedule a longer break, which will allow them to air the final two episodes of season 22 back-to-back over two consecutive weeks.
As for why there will be no reruns airing during this time, well, that seems to be part of ABC’s efforts to give its newest original drama, RJ Decker, a chance to pick up additional viewers as ABC begins making final renewal and cancellation decisions. On April 9, ABC turns over its entire Thursday night primetime block to the Scott Speedman-led drama, bringing fans a marathon of the show’s first three episodes.
The following week, ABC will air reruns of 911 and 911: Nashville on April 16, with an RJ Decker rerun closing the night in the 10 p.m. time slot usually occupied by Grey’s Anatomy. Finally, on April 23, ABC will bring viewers coverage of the 2026 NFL Draft in primetime, thus keeping Grey’s and the 911 shows off the schedule for the night.
Grey’s Anatomy will then finally return to ABC’s schedule the final Thursday of April with its penultimate episode of the season before the show signs off for the summer with its season 22 finale on May 7. We'll then head into the annual summer break and have to wait months for season 23 to arrive, which should be sometime in September or October.
Needless to say, Grey's Anatomy fans have an interesting stretch ahead, but fans can at least expect a pair of unforgettable final episodes as the season draws to a close. The penultimate episode will welcome back a familiar face from Station 19 while also putting the lives of two Grey Sloan doctors on the line!
