Chicago PD fans may be getting a wish for more "Burgwater" in upcoming episodes!
It's been so long since Chicago PD premiered that it's easy to forget when Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) were just rookie patrol officers. The first season showed the pair working as partners handling smaller street crimes, yet each already showed skills in becoming a detective.
Atwater was the first to be promoted to the Intelligence Unit at the end of Season 1. Burgess eventually joined the Unit in Season 4, and the pair has worked together a lot since then. They've used their bond well on the job, as each knows and respects the other.
However, fans are worried that we haven't seen as much of this friendship on screen lately. Burgess has been busy raising her adoptive daughter and her engagement to Adam Ruzek. Meanwhile, Atwater has had his issues, from clashing with other cops to meeting Val Soto (Natalee Linez), a clinical psychologist.
The pair had obvious chemistry, but a romantic direction was shaken when they fought on Atwater pressuring a troubled suspect. They did seem open to trying but faced some challenges.
Thankfully, this relationship leads to hopes that we'll get more Burgwater scenes soon.
Chicago PD showrunner on Burgwater
Speaking to TVLine, Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan confirmed that Val will return in a future episode, which will lead to Atwater and Kim talking more.
"[It was] definitely presented in the episode where we first met Val as this off-switch. 'It's gonna be no strings attached, it's gonna be fun. It's gonna be something just for the two of us.'" Now the question is, "Can that sustain? Is that the most long-term situation? So we get to see that relationship morph quite a bit over the next few episodes for Atwater. And then Burgess is, really, sort of his confidant, his sounding board, for all of that. He's not being too open with everyone else on the team about what's going on, but she is pressing him to be, so he ends up opening up to her."
It makes sense that Atwater turns to Kim as she's his closest female friend. Their bond as partners is stronger than some romances and Kim knows all about tricky relationships thanks to her long one with Adam.
That will give Kim some good insight to share with Kevin on how to handle Val and whether a seemingly quiet fling can escalate into a regular relationship. It'll also show just how the two have grown over the years from bumbling rookies to capable detectives.
So Chicago PD fans can be happy to know we will see more of this classic partnership on screen soon and give Burgess and Atwater some long overdue friend time.
Chicago PD Season 12 airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
