Some cancellations always hurt more than others. It’s usually because they end abruptly, and that was certainly the case for three out of the six CBS shows canceled in 2024.
Three of the shows at least got endings to give us chance to say goodbye to the shows. Then there was another technically canceled show, but CBS opted to reverse the decision. Yes, we’re talking about SWAT, and there were certainly other shows on the network that deserved the same.
We’re taking a look back at each of the cancellations of 2024 across the broadcast networks. We start with CBS because honestly I’m still the most salty about one cancellation in particular.
The CBS shows that ended in 2024
Three of the shows technically ended. While CBS opted to cancel the likes of Bob Hearts Abishola and Blue Bloods, the network gave them notice and time. Fans had the chance to say a real goodbye to the characters.
Blue Bloods even got a season split in two, making up for the writers strike that meant a shorter season order for most shows in the 2023–2024 season. We got the final eight episodes of the Reagan family story in fall 2024, with the series finale airing before Christmas in 2024.
Bob Hearts Abishola didn’t quite get the same respect. It did get an ending, but it came with a heavily reduced cast and episode count. The ending felt a little rushed and abrupt, making it clear that this series had more legs.
Young Sheldon was the third show to end in 2024. This one was more of a justifiable ending. After all, there was only so far that we could go with Sheldon Cooper’s story before we would hit The Big Bang Theory territory. The season brought us the traumatic death that we were expecting but weren’t ready for, and it also led to another spin-off series. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage has taken its timeslot to continue some of the Cooper story.
The CBS shows canceled in 2024
Now we come to the three shows that were abruptly canceled in 2024. NCIS: Hawaii remains the one that I’m the most salty about. This show still had a loyal following, and it had some great stories to tell. To make matters worse, the third season was so LL Cool J heavy that it stopped the show feeling like what it started off as—I love Sam Hana, but I didn’t need him in NCIS: Hawaii season 3 as much.
CSI: Vegas was another show that I would have loved to see more of. The series was abruptly canceled after three seasons, although I will say that this one wasn’t all that surprising when looking at the linear ratings. The series did manage to end without a major cliffhanger, cutting out the final moments after learning that it would be canceled to avoid a disappointing series finale for the fans.
Finally, it was all about So Help Me Todd. Again, the linear ratings put this series on the chopping block, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a loyal fan base. The series was quirky and fun, which helped to break up some of the grittier dramas on the network throughout the week. It also ended on a cliffhanger, showing that there were far more stories to tell.
