The CW has had a messy few years, with multiple cancellations and final season orders. In 2024, five shows were either canceled or ended, and one of them was beautifully managed as it brought the end of an era.
There is only one remaining original from The CW era of TV after Nexstar took it over. That one is All American, with the other three shows coming to an end in 2024. two of The CW cancellations weren’t actually due to the network itself. We can blame the Canadian networks that commissioned the shows instead.
The CW show that ended in 2024
There was one TV show from The CW that officially ended. It was final seasoned, making sure that fans had a chance to say goodbye. This was important, considering it brought the end of an era. Yes, we’re talking about Superman & Lois.
This was the last remaining Arrowverse series on the network. Other CW superhero shows somewhat flopped their endings, or they were abruptly canceled. Superman & Lois knocked it out of the park, though. If the series really had to end—and that was highly debateable—the finale showed us all how things should be done.
The CW shows canceled in 2024
The four other shows were canceled, with one of them getting canceled ahead of its season even premering on the network. All American: Homecoming didn’t get a chance to say goodbye, but it should have. The CW should have known that it wasn’t all that optimistic about the ratings, and I do feel like it was unfair to gaslight everyone into the third season with hope of a fourth.
Likewise, Walker was canceled after four seasons. That cancellation came with a lot of disappointment and anger, especially as the details of Nexstar taking on the show came out. Nexstar had to renew the series for a fourth season to get the deal to buy The CW. It would have been better announcing that the series would be final seasoned, allowing time to craft an ending similar to Superman & Lois. Viewers deserved better.
The CW cancellations that were by Canadian networks
One of two cancellations was actually a show that The CW had little control over. Run the Burbs was canceled after three seasons, but it was actually the Canadian network CBC that canceled it. While The CW could have arguably picked it up, that was much harder to do, especially when licensing is so much cheaper. If Run the Burbs found another Canadian home, it would have been interesting to see what The CW would have done.
The other of the two was originally a CTV series, The Spencer Sisters. The CW licensed it to help with programming due to the strike action, but the mystery drama didn’t find its audience. CTV decided not to go ahead with the second season, and it doesn’t look like The CW was interested in saving it. Again, licensing is cheaper than creating content.
