Boston Blue may have just broken up a beloved couple, but is there a chance of a reunion?

Caution: This episode contains SPOILERS for Boston Blue season 1

When Boston Blue premiered, Blue Bloods fans were overjoyed to see a dream come true: After years of dancing around as just partners, Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) were now a couple. The romance was affected when Danny transferred to Boston, but they kept it up, with Baez dropping by in one episode to help on a case.

The April 17 installment had Baez once more coming back to Boston to aid Danny on a tough case. But just as Danny was feeling great, Baez dropped the bomb that her mother was sick and she needed time to take care of her. She knew Danny had a new life in Boston, and maintaining a long-distance relationship was too much for both of them. It wasn’t a full break-up but a pause that may become more permanent.

Speaking to Us Weekly at the CBS Fest, Wahlberg defended Baez’s actions to angry fans while pointing out that Danny wasn’t the type to just give up.

“She’s in a crisis. She’s not sure what to do. Danny is very stubborn [though so] he ain’t going down without a fight. They must hold out hope for [them to] rekindle [their romance].”

Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Danny’s Boston partner Lena Silver, summed up the feelings of many fans with “I would love [to see them back together. I love Marissa, and I think that they’re lovely together.”

So is there a chance the couple can reunite?

Will Danny and Baez get back together?

Obviously, a big issue is the distance between New York and Boston. It seems unlikely Baez would want to transfer out of her current job to a new city, especially with her mother’s health issues. The way she and Danny talked made it sound like this could be a more permanent breakup.

However, Wahlberg hinted there is a plan to stretch the storyline out with a potential reunion.

“I grew up watching General Hospital and All My Children and [I remember when] Laura disappeared. Laura disappeared and Luke was heartbroken and everyone’s like, ‘Oh man. Laura quit the show.’ Guess what? She came back and he ran and he hugged her. Then she left again. But that’s OK, it’s TV!”

The last episodes of the first season will have Danny throw himself into the job to get over his heartbreak. It’s rougher for him, as Baez was the first serious relationship since Danny’s wife died years before, and the pair connected so well. Fans would have loved seeing more of Baez mingling with the Boston cast and her and Danny dating off hours. It’d be nice if season 2 had a reunion of the couple, as it’d be a shame to see this couple crash just as they were getting off the ground.

Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10/9c on CBS.
