FBI is getting a mini-crossover with Nina dropping in! Find out more about why she’s showing up in the mothership series!
FBI fans have been enduring some unexpected changes on the show. The Season 7 premiere opened by revealing Wallace (Katherine Renee Kane) was leaving the unit. That left Scola (John Boyd) without a regular partner with a couple of fill-ins that didn’t work out.
The plan was for Sydney Ortiz (Lisette Olivera) to join as a BAU operative jumping to the main team. But in a shocking turn, before Sydney’s first episode even aired, it was announced Olivera was leaving the series. It sounded like the character just wasn’t working for the producers and being written out.
That means the next few episodes are likely to show Scola partnering with either OA or Maggie until a new actress is cast as a new partner. Thankfully, the midseason premiere has Scola paired up with the best partner he could ask for: His love Nina Chase (Shantel VanSanten).
Originally looking like a one-episode character when she debuted in Season 4 with the backstory of her and Scola having a one-night stand. She stuck around, and when Maggie was injured in a gas attack, Nina took her place on the squad.
That ended with Nina revealing she was pregnant with Scola’s child and transferred to another department. It’s been shown they still live together raising their son. A big move was Nina becoming a regular on FBI: Most Wanted.
A Most Wanted episode had Scola popping in while Nina had to deal with her judgemental father coming for a visit. Now, Nina is returning the favor to help Scola in a tough time.
Why is Nina coming to FBI?
TVLine released images and previews for the Tuesday, Jan. 28 episode, “Descent.” The episode description indicates the team has to race against time to prevent an airline disaster.
“The investigation into an assistant U.S. attorney’s death leads the team to a related airline whistleblower scandal and the chilling discovery that they don’t have much time to thwart terrorists from crashing numerous in-flight commercial airplanes. Dealing with the memory of his brother, who was a 9/11 victim, the case pushes Scola hard to prevent another catastrophe.”
As the plotline indicates, Scola is going to be reminded too much of his brother’s death. That has Nina popping up to help in both the investigation and cheering her partner up. It will be fun to see Nina working with the team again, including Maggie, who she hasn’t shared as much screen time with.
It’s also great to see more of Nina and Scola together and how they handle their lives. It’s interesting that the Jan. 28 episode of FBI: Most Wanted will have a subplot of Nina’s sister visiting and seeming to need help. Thus, both Nina and Scola have to deal with some tough family issues on the same night.
It’s always fun to watch the FBI shows connect and especially with this fun couple so Nina and Scola reunited on the main show should make this a big episode.
FBI Season 7 returns on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 8/7c on CBS.
