As Ghosts season 5 came to an end, our favorite comedy served up one of its biggest cliffhangers yet. While on their way back to Woodstone Manor after helping to save the property, Pete disappeared in the back seat of the car, leaving his fate up in the air.
As the Halloween special opens, Sam is away in Australia filming Polar Opposites—a storyline worked into the show to help accommodate Rose McIver’s maternity leave—but she calls in to check on Jay and to see if there has been any progress on the efforts to bring Pete back. Jay informs her that they’re currently working on trying to find something that was on Pete’s person when he died so they can perform a séance, on Halloween.
Shortly after, Alberta informs Sas and Flower that Pete’s friend is on his way with the box of Pete’s belongings. She’s thrilled at the possibility of being able to bring Pete back with the séance, but Sas isn’t as thrilled. Once Alberta leaves the room, Sas informs Flower that Pete had a DNS, a do-not-séance, and did not want to be brought back out of fear that he would slip up and say something about the afterlife, leading to his face melting away.
Meanwhile, after his call with Sam, Jay has some fun shooting some hoops inside the manor with Kyle and gets a little carried away, breaking a mirror in the process. He quickly tracks down a replacement in hopes that he can hide his error from Sam, but there’s just one problem with the new mirror he brings in: there’s a ghost trapped inside!
Issac recognizes the woman inside the mirror, as does Thor, and there’s a good reason for this: the mirror ghost is Hetty’s sister, Margaret. So how did Margaret end up trapped in the mirror? Well, it seems that when Margaret was on her deathbed, dying from a toothache, Hetty broke out her cocaine. When Margaret passed, her spirit caught a glimpse of her reflection in the mirror and became trapped as a result of Hetty doing her line of cocaine on it.
Downstairs, Bela hosts a Halloween party only for guys in hopes of hitting it off with Evan, a cute guy from her gym she’s been crushing on. The plan seems to be working nicely for her until Amanda from Jay’s restaurant drops in and Bela tries to send her away, but before she can, Evan arrives, and we learn that he and Amanda went to college together.
Flower and Issac come to check on Hetty and encourage her to take this chance to repair their relationship, which is when Hetty reveals an unexpected secret. It seems Margaret was responsible for telling their father about the painter Hetty was in love with, but Issac encourages her take this fresh start and speak with her sister.
Jerry drops off the box of Pete’s belongings and finds a pair of glasses that Pete seems to have been wearing when he died. As Jay leaves to get the séance candles, Sas finally informs the rest of the group about Pete’s DNS and his fear of oversharing about the afterlife. Alberta makes it clear that his DNS was before he knew her and makes it clear they are proceeding with this session, as this is her chance to say goodbye.

Margaret tricks Hetty, leaving her trapped in the mirror
Taking Issac’s advice, Hetty goes to see her sister, and Margaret surprises her by suggesting they let bygones be bygones. It turns out this was all a ploy to trick Hetty, as Margaret lures her to make contact with the mirror, which gives her the opportunity to swap places with Hetty, freeing herself and trapping Hetty in the mirror.
Turns out, Halloween is the one night when the veil is thin enough to allow a spirit to pass through the mirror, but it’s not that simple. It’s a trade-off: one out, one in. She tricked Hetty into switching places, as Hetty harmed her, and now Hetty has a lifetime to figure out what she did. With that, Margaret heads out with the intent to leave.
Downstairs, the séance takes place, and it works as Pete returns. He’s thrilled to see everyone but overshares and begins to melt before everyone’s eyes! Thankfully, this did not happen, as it was simply Alberta realizing that she made a mistake and shouldn’t proceed with the séance. She calls off the séance as she realizes she must honor Pete’s wishes. While she might not get to see Pete again, Kyle found a tape with an old ad Pete ran for his travel business, which gives her the chance to see him one last time.
With the séance called off, Kyle and Jay head down to the party and are joined by the ghosts. To their surprise, Margaret comes running down the stairs and tells them a story about how she and Hetty made up and that freed her from the mirror. She lies about Hetty taking a moment to lay down as she makes her way out the door under the guise of getting some fresh air. After Kyle fills him in on this, Jay decides to ditch the mirror, not realizing that Hetty is now trapped inside. As Jay and Mark take the mirror away, Gabe jumps out and scares them, resulting in the mirror being dropped and broken.
We flash back to the past as Margaret comes to see Hetty and ask for her thoughts, but Hetty tunes her out as she’s distracted by her sister’s mustache. In the present day, Kyle informs Jay that Hetty was trapped in the mirror as she explains to the group that her sister tricked her into the mirror. Hetty informs them that they only have until midnight to reconstruct the mirror and find Margaret in order to get her back into the mirror and free Hetty.

Jay, Kyle and the ghosts work to free Hetty from the mirror before Halloween ends
Outside, Margaret bumps into Flower on her way to try to leave the property to get to Paris. Much to Margaret’s surprise, she’s unable to leave the property, which is when Flower informs her of the boundaries they have. Flower suggests they head back inside as Margaret informs her that she’s playing hide and seek until midnight.
Inside, Kyle and Jay work to repair the mirror as Hetty flashes back to the past via the mirror. She sees a memory of the day her painting was performed when true love seemed to be in her grasp. There’s clearly more to the memory than Hetty recalls, but we’ll see what that ends up being. Kyle and Jay are able to assemble the mirror, but there is still one piece missing. Hetty enlists Issac’s help in checking to see if it’ll work without the missing piece, but when he touches the mirror nothing happens. They have to find the last piece before midnight if they have any hopes of setting Hetty free.
As Thor and Sas search for Margaret, Hetty hears a conversation through the missing shard that seems to have gotten lodged in Evan’s costume. Unfortunately for Bela, Jay needs her help calling Evan to see where he is so they can find the missing piece of the mirror. Evan ignores the call, so Jay tries calling Amanda, but she ignores the call too. That’s when Hetty hears Evan ordering a menu item from Sonic, and Jay uses his knowledge of Sonic to track Evan and Amanda down to a nearby Sonic after Hetty overhears the bathroom code.
Jay and Bela arrive at the Sonic and find the missing shard in his pocket. Just as Jay places the final piece into the mirror, Sas and Thor bring Margaret upstairs with the intent of shoving her back into the mirror to free Hetty.

Ghosts Halloween special ends with a shocking development for Pete
Margaret begs Hetty to help her, as Hetty quips at her to give her one reason why she should help her. Hetty flashes back to the memory of the conversation she had with her sister in which Margaret professed her feelings for the painter and she agreed to help, a conversation she missed when she zoned out in staring at her sister’s mustache. The vision shows Hetty that she was wrong as she confesses to not having been listening when Margaret told her about the painter.
Hetty wishes she could speak to her sister outside the confines of the mirror, and Issac steps up to swap places so that Hetty can be freed. Once outside the mirror, the two sisters finally make amends and hug it out.
Downstairs, Kyle apologizes to Bela for how her party turned out. The two toast to a happy Halloween, hinting that something could be brewing between the pair.
As the Halloween special comes to an end, we jump ahead to the anniversary of Pete's death. Everyone gathers for a moment of silence to commemorate the moment. Outside, we see Pete return in the very spot where he died. He then walks into the house and surprises the group, but it turns out this isn't the Pete who disappeared. Pete seems to have been reset and possess no memory of what has happened in the time since his death!
