It seems a key member of the Ghosts ensemble will be checking out of Woodstone Manor, at least temporarily.
Ghosts star Rose McIver has announced that she will miss several episodes of the show’s upcoming sixth season. McIver broke the news on Instagram, revealing to fans that she’ll be “a little absent” as Ghosts season 6 begins following the birth of her second child.
"Keen-eyed viewers will notice that Sam is a little absent at the start of this season of Ghosts - I’ve been a wee bit preoccupied but will be back to join everyone soon! Huge thanks to everyone for your patience. I love both my jobs and feel really fortunate to be supported in both,” McIver wrote, sharing a sweet photo of her child grasping onto her thumb.
McIver and her husband George Byrne welcomed their first child, daughter Chloe, back in 2024. McIver announced her pregnancy at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, and she filmed much of season 3’s final episodes while pregnant with the show leveraging several age-old tricks to hide her baby bump on the show. This allowed McIver to avoid missing an episode of the show with Sam appearing in every episode of the season.
This time around, McIver will be missing a handful of episodes, as she confirmed via Instagram, though the exact number of episodes is not yet known. It is also unclear whether McIver will miss the show’s Halloween and Christmas specials, which will air this fall before the show’s return in 2027 for its sixth season.
While it has not yet been revealed how the show will explain McIver’s absence, the show paved the way for Sam to head to Hollywood after selling her movie trilogy pitch and landing a writing gig on the project. It was teased that Sam was going to be spending some time on a Hollywood set, and fans had hoped we’d get to spend that time with her; however, it seems that storyline will likely be deployed to explain McIver’s absence at the top of the season.
McIver’s brief leave from the show was also likely a factor in the show’s decision to add its first new series regular, with Ben Feldman promoted to series regular for season 6. With Sam away, Feldman’s character, Kyle, will be the designated ghost-sitter, which will pave the way for some fun and interesting storylines.
We’ll certainly be going to be missing McIver in the early episodes of the season, but fans can trust in the Ghosts writers to craft a fun story arc during this stretch of time, as McIver is not the first member of the cast to miss episodes. Sheila Carrasco missed several episodes of season 3 following the birth of her daughter, which resulted in a fun storyline in which her character Flower was presumed to have been “sucked off” to her afterlife only to have actually been trapped in a well.
