With CBS looking to form franchises, I’m surprise the network hasn’t looked at expanding the world of Ghosts. The comedy series, based on the British comedy of the same name, has been a huge hit. In fact, it landed a two-season renewal back in February 2025.
While this series does end up mostly being set in one location due to the rules of the spirits and ghost boundaries, there is a way to expand on the show. Pete offered the perfect idea at the end of Ghosts season 4, episode 19. While Sam turned him down on the offer, there is sure to be someone out there who wants to go through with it.
Ghosts can have a detective-style comedy series
Pete was able to solve a cold case during the episode. After learning from Donna that she didn’t kill her husband, Pete decided to head to her former home to get some answers. There he met another ghost, who initially told him that Donna had killed her husband. However, it turned out that it was his wife who did the murder and he helped to cover it up.
The episode ended with this decades-old cold case being solved, leading to Pete to suggest that he and Sam go on adventures to solve more cold cases. By being able to talk to ghosts, it’s possible to get the answers and find out where bodies and murder weapons have been hidden.
Pete has a chance to help other spirits
This would be a great way to utilize Pete’s ability to cross boundaries and offer him a chance to grow as a person. By being away from the house, he would be able to help other spirits. Some may be the murder victims wanting to let the police know who actually killed them, while others may have been bystanders who saw it all. Then there may be others who were wrongly accused who want to set the record straight.
While Sam doesn’t want to do it, it doesn’t mean someone else can’t team up with Pete. Sam can’t be the only person who can see ghosts. Pete could come across another human who will be able to be the Cagney to his Lacey.
Alternatively, we could see Pete team up with another roamer ghost. This would be a little harder to them let the cops know what happened, but there is an option. Maybe there can even be a ghost who doesn’t want his or her murder being exposed, becoming a Moriarty to Pete’s Sherlock for the season.
Either way, a Ghosts spin-off with Pete solving cold cases would be a great way to expand the universe without getting trapped with another house and another ghost boundary. It also opens up the introduction to other spirits around the world.
Ghosts airs on Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS.
