Tyler James Williams talks Gregory and Janine's relationship on Abbott Elementary season 4

The hit comedy series Abbott Elementary is coming back for a fourth season, and in the last few moments of season 3, we saw Gregory going back to Janine's apartment after her party, drawing the blinds to kiss her out-of-sight from the mockumentary crew. The cliffhanger had fans screaming for the couple, and we imagine that Gregory and Janine's long-awaited relationship will finally be front and center in season 4.

At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event this summer, the cast and creative team came together to celebrate the show and look ahead at what fans can expect to see when it returns with new episodes. Talking about the Abbott Elementary season 3 finale, actor Tyler James Williams, who plays Mr. Gregory Eddie, reacted to what it was like reading that finale scene for the first time.

Williams said he felt just like many fans did when he got to the end of the script. "I was like y'all when I read it for the first time," he said. "I remember the finale. I was like 'finally!'"

Williams wants to see the two characters continue their will-they-won't-they relationship on the show, and he praised the writers and creative team for how perfect the timing has been for the couple's relationship to develop.

"I have to live in his skin. I feel it too. I know," Williams shared. "Even in that scene right before Gregory goes back to Janine's apartment, I remember we had a lot of conversation... And I remember really feeling it. Like really, really, I'm running out of excuses to not have him back in that apartment. And I think what's so nice about the writing is we squeezed all of the juice that we possibly could. As the actor, you're beginning to feel it. You know it's time... The timing was right."

The cast couldn't tease too much about what will happen in the upcoming season, but earlier this year, Williams revealed to TVLine that things will not be smooth for Gregory and Janine when it comes to dating as co-workers. Williams said that it would be just as great as it is dangerous, but honestly, that's all to be expected because conflict is the engine that keeps every show moving, and I want to see Abbott Elementary around for a very long time!

Abbott Elementary season 4 premieres Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024 on ABC, and is currently available to stream on Disney Plus, Hulu, and Max.
