Following the heart-racing Idol Arena at Hollywood Week, the American Idol 2024 contestants gave their all during the Showstopper round. Going from 143, contestants were cut all the way down to 56. And tonight, another 32 Idol hopefuls headed home as judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie decided who made it into the Top 24. Ready to find out who they are!?

Top 24 American Idol 2024 contestants

The very first contestant to snag a spot is Australia-native Jordan Anthony! He's certainly got rock star material, and I can't wait to see how far he makes it in the competition. Eyes are constantly on the Platinum Ticket winners, and American Idol didn't have us wait too long to find out the fate of the very first recipient, Odell Burton Jr.

Drum roll, please... Burton Jr. is in the Top 24! Though the judges gave this poor guy, and us to be honest, a mini heart attack when we initially thought he was heading home with the way Perry phrased it. Phew! 28-year-old Nya was nervous because this is the last time she can be eligible to audition for the show as there is an age limit of 29 years old on American Idol. Thankfully, she's moving on to the next round at Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii.

There's some contestants that take a while to warm up to, while others became immediate fan-favorites. Platinum Ticket winner Abi Carter was definitley a fan-favorite from the start, wowing us with her rendition of "What Was I Made For?" by Billie Eilish from the Barbie movie. The 21-year-old earned herself a spot in the Top 24! All three Platinum Ticket recipients have made it through as Julia Gagnon is also moving on. Check out the full Top 24 list below! (Note – the following results were updated live during the airing of the episode):

Who went home tonight?

Plot twist: A sing off determines a spot in the Top 24

The judges revealed that they couldn't decide between 21-year-old Alyssa Raghu from Los Angeles, California (who has auditioned twice before on seasons 16 and 17) and 20 year-old Utah native Kaibrienne Richins. And so the two lovely ladies will need to have a sing off to determine which one of them is moving on and going into American Idol season 22's Top 24. The two gals chose the song "Shallow." The first elimination of the night came, and it was Alyssa Raghu.

Then, the same happened with Netherlands-native Ziggy Kassenberg and 23-year-old Mackenzie Sol. The two contestants also had to have a sing off to help the judges decide who would be moving forward. The two chose the song "Jealous" by Labrinth." Ultimately, the sing off helped Mackenzie Sol secure a spot in the Top 24, which means Ziggy's Idol journey came to an end. Honestly this was a big shock as I thought Ziggy would make it far in the competition. But, it just goes to show that no one is safe in the tough competition. Here's the list of who went home this evening:

  • Alyssa Raghu, 21 from Los Angeles, California
  • Justice Murphy, 21 from Forrest City, Arizona
  • Micaela McCall, 28 from Santa Barbara, California
  • Scarlett Lee, 26 from London, England
  • Michael Rice, 26 from Hartlepool, England
  • Ziggy, 23 from Gorredijk, Netherlands

Get ready next week as the Top 24 perform for the first votes of the season at Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii! The first 12 will perform on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Tori Kelly (who was actually a former American Idol contestant herself!) will be coming on to mentor, perform, and join "the judges on the panel," per the synopsis. And an exciting return is American Idol 2023 winner Ian Tongi who returns to Idol to perform! Then on Monday, April 8, the second half of the Top 24 will be taking the stage for our votes to see who will get into the Top 20 with mentor Jelly Roll on hand to help guide them. Don't miss it!
