Two more American Idol hopefuls were sent home last week, Roman Collins and Jayna Elise unfortunately did not make it into the Top 10. Tonight, we were back with another round of performances for those who did make it through as they took the stage live in Hollywood for our votes.

This evening, country music star Shania Twain mentored the group who chose a song that was released during their birth year. Plus, it was an exciting night of performances from two previous American Idol winners - Scotty McCreery who was crowned the champ in season 10 (2011) as well as season 18 (2020) winner Just Sam. Who could be following in their footsteps? It's going to be one of the Top 8! Below we shared who's still in the competition and which two contestants headed home.

Contestants who made it into the Top 8 of American Idol 2024

American Idol saw one of my favorite contestants on season 22 and that's Jack Blocker! He went for an interesting and risky choice - "Believe" by Cher. It's not what I would have expected the hopeful to choose necessarily, but honestly he nailed it! I felt so serenaded. Thankfully, America felt the same and Jack is continuing on in the competition! Also moving on into the Top 8 is Kaibrienne Richins who was the last performance of the night. I love her raspy voice and she brings such wonderful emotion every time.

Other standouts from the night were Platinum Ticket winners Abi Carter and Julia Gagnon who nail it every week. And they got themselves into the next round tomorrow night. Here's the full list of the Top 8 of American Idol 2024! (Note – the following results were updated live during the airing of the episode):

  • Triston Harper, 15 from McIntosh, Alabama - “She’s Country” by Jason Aldean
  • Kaibrienne Richins, 20 from Henefer, Utah - “Here Without You” by 3 Door Down
  • Jack Blocker, 25 from Dallas, Texas - “Believe” by Cher
  • Julia Gagnon, 21 from Cumberland, Maine (Platinum Ticket) - “Here I Am” by Bryan Adams
  • Abi Carter, 21 from Indio, California (Platinum Ticket) - “Clocks” by Coldplay
  • McKenna Breinholt, 25 from Gilbert, Arizona - “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls

Who was eliminated tonight?

The night kicked off with Mia Matthews' rendition of "No One Needs to Know" by Shania Twain, which was a nice song choice as the mentor this week was the country music star herself! And Matthews was able to get some guidance on the tune from the artist right then and there. But in the end, unfortunatley it wasn't enough for Mia to earn herself a spot in the Top 8. She headed home.

The second elimination in tonight's episode was Kayko, and honestly I'm just shocked. He brings something different with each performance and is such a natural on stage. He brought his all, and Kayko deserved better. I'm really disappointed he didn't make it further in the competition. But there's just so much talent, it's hard to choose one winner. Hopefully he finds success after Idol because he deserves it!

Tomorrow night, April 29, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC it's a fan-favorite round from each season! Not only are the contestants competing for a spot in the Top 7, but judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan will also have a bit of a friendly competition going on. That's because this round is the Judge's Song Contest. Each of the Idol hopefuls in the Top 8 will be presented with three songs, one from each judge, and they have to pick one to perform. Though they don't know who suggested which tune until the end of their performance.

The judges are "competing" for getting the most songs picked. By the end of the night, our live votes will determine the first six contestants moving forward, with the judges deciding who takes that final spot in the Top 7. This will be a bittersweet episode as well as the show pays tribute to late American Idol season 5 alum Mandisa, who made it into the Top 9 in her season. She passed away at the age of 47 on April 18.
