Ryan Gosling may not have won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, but he won our hearts as Ken in Greta Gerwig's hit movie, Barbie. The Oscar for this category rightfully went to Robert Downey Jr. for his performance in Oppenheimer. This is not the first time Gosling has been nominated for one of the highest honors in the film industry, it is the third.

The actor was first nominated in 2006 for Best Actor for his role in Half Nelson. A decade later, in 2016, Gosling was up for Best Actor once more for La La Land. Unfortunately, the star has yet to take home an Academy Award, but the day will come. And it's not like Gosling's talents are not being recognized. He has been nominated numerous times, one of his wins includes a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (La La Land).

Hey, Academy...can we give Ryan Gosling an Oscar for that amazing "I'm Just Ken" performance? I think we can all agree it was the highlight of the ceremony.

Can't get enough of Ryan Gosling? Welcome to the club! Whether you only recently discovered the actor or have long been a fan, here are five of the best movies to watch starring the actor.

Barbie and 5 must-see movies starring Ryan Gosling

Let's keep the Ryan Gosling appreciation and love going this week by watching the below movies (listed in no particular order). Don't have time for them all? No worries! Keep reading for my top three picks!

  • Drive (2011), available for rent or purchase on VOD
  • La La Land (2016), available for rent or purchase on VOD
  • Barbie (2023), streaming on Max
  • Blue Valentine (2010), streaming on Max
  • Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), streaming on Hulu
  • The Notebook (2004), streaming on Max and Hulu

As you can see, the streamer to have is Max as half of our top six Ryan Gosling movies are streaming there. Two of the six are on Hulu, while Drive and La La Land we could only find on VOD (such as Vudu).

From the list above, Barbie is Gosling's latest movie, but the actor has two projects coming soon. First, we'll see him star as Colt Seavers in The Fall Guy, set to premiere in theaters on May 3. And currently in pre-production, Gosling portrays Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary. As soon as we learn more about the latter, we'll update this post!

Barbie

Of course Greta Gerwig's Barbie is first on my list! If you have not watched this movie, I am going to assume you live under a rock. Before you do anything at all this week, watch Barbie. The movie is conveniently streaming on Max. In addition to Gosling, it also stars Margot Robbie, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Simu Liu, and others.

Barbie follows Barbie and Ken in a colorful, peaceful, and dreamy world called Barbie Land, where women rule and men... are just there. This is how they believe the real world is, too. Imagine Barbie's surprise when she leaves Barbie Land only to realize things are very different in the real world.

La La Land

"I'm Just Ken" is not the only song Ryan Gosling can effortlessly perform. For more musical numbers, watch La La Land, which also stars Emma Stone. The musical rom-com follows Sebastian (Gosling), a struggling pianist, and Mia (Stone), an aspiring actress. The two fall hard for each other, but their relationship is tested throughout their journey. Now, this isn't your typical love story. Be prepared for laughs and tears (both sad and happy tears). La La Land is currently not available on any streaming platform that we could find. The only way to watch is to rent or purchase the movie via VOD, such as Vudu, or wherever you regularly buy movies from.

Emma Stone received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the Oscar-nominated movie. Gosling was nominated for Best Actor but did not win. Director Damien Chazelle, however, did score an Oscar for Best Director. The movie was also nominated for Best Picture, but lost to Moonlight.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

We're wrapping up our three highlights with one of my favorite rom-coms, Crazy, Stupid, Love, which also stars the hilarious Steve Carell. And yes, the movie features Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling together once more. Stone and Gosling truly make one amazing team as they share fireworks chemistry.

If you enjoy romantic comedies (that are heavier on the comedy than romance), Crazy, Stupid, Love is one you have to check out. The movie is available to stream on Hulu.

Which of these movies starring Ryan Gosling is your favorite? Do you know what you'll be adding to your to-watch list?
