Updated: Apr. 29, 2024 - CBS has created many fan-favorite shows over the years that we have grown attached to, whether they be hilarious takes on scientists such as The Big Bang Theory or learning about the past in Ghosts. The point is that we enjoy their stories and the "what happens next" factor, not knowing exactly what we're about to head into.

With the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes stretching on for months last year, CBS and numerous other TV networks halted their productions. Many of our favorite shows were delayed in their broadcasting premieres. Additionally, because of the strikes, several shows had shortened seasons, which didn't help with our hopes with certain renewals.

With CBS rolling out its new freshman shows for the 2024-2025 season, the network had to let go of a few of its iconic shows. Which ones are fans saying goodbye to in the remaining weeks of the 2023-2024 TV season?

CBS shows that got the axe for the 2024-2025 TV season

CBS cancelled shows 2024
“Forgive Us Our Trespasses” – Danny and Baez team up with Danny’s old partner, Jackie Curatola (Jennifer Esposito), to find a copycat killer emulating murders from a previous case. Also, Frank and Mayor Chase (Dylan Walsh) battle over how best to handle the city’s rising homeless population; and Jamie, Eddie and Erin team up to build evidence against a previously released man who they believe is again committing criminal assault, on the 13th season finale of BLUE BLOODS, Friday, May 19 /

Five CBS productions won't be coming back to our small screens next year, either due to poor ratings, the effects of the strikes, or the cast wanting to move on and focus on new endeavors. Then, there must be room on the schedule for new shows, including a reboot of the 1980s legal drama Matlock.

The six cancelled CBS shows are:

  • Blue Bloods 2010-2024 (fourteen seasons)
  • Bob Hearts Abishola 2019-2024 (five seasons)
  • CSI: Vegas 2021-2024 (three seasons)
  • NCIS: Hawai'i 2021-2024 (three seasons)
  • So Help Me Todd after 2022-2024 (two seasons)
  • Young Sheldon after 2017-2024 (seven seasons)

Why Blue Bloods was cancelled after 14 seasons

We sat around the table for over a decade with policeman Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) and his large family. Blue Bloods had plenty of heart with strong Catholic values, something that's rare in today's TV programming.

Its cancellation was nothing short of a disappointment, as fans and viewers of the show became attached to the storylines and the full-rounded characters. While CBS didn't provide an official reason for Blue Bloods' ending, budget cuts and the impact of the strikes played a likely role.

Per a Deadline article published on November 20th, 2023, Selleck addressed the show's demise and his gratitude for being an integral part of Blue Bloods for several years.

"For the past 13 years it has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family. Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors and crew has been a dream come true and I’m grateful to have been a part of this extraordinary group for over 275 episodes. Thank you to CBS Studios and CBS Network for their steadfast support and we offer heartfelt gratitude to the fans who gathered with us for dinner every Friday night."

Season 14 has been divided into two halves. The first half is already airing on Friday nights, with the second half returning later this year.

Why Bob Hearts Abishola after 5 seasons

The Chuck Lorre sitcom followed an interracial couple who met during Bob's (Billy Gardell) hospital stay. Bob's partner is Abishola Adebambo (Folake Olowofoyeku), his nurse who aided in his recovery.

Why CSI: Vegas was cancelled after 3 seasons

CSI: Vegas was "on the bubble," so it was no surprise that the series won't return for a fourth season. It didn't meet the ratings expectations despite performing well for the network. The numbers peaked at 6.2.

Why NCIS: Hawai'i was cancelled after 3 seasons

Given the fact that NCIS: Hawai'i was the #12 non-sports program on broadcast, ratings weren't the reason why the series was canceled. As Hidden Remote previously reported, CBS' parent company Paramount Global is looking to balance its sheet ahead of its sell and the show was deemed too expensive even after a "massive" budget cut was floated along with a shortened fourth and final season.

Why So Help Me Todd was cancelled after 2 seasons

The sophomore law procedural starring Skylar Astin and Marcia Gay Harden won't handle any more court cases as So Help Me Todd was cancelled due to low ratings, averaging about 6.2 million viewers and 0.5 in the demos. The series finale airing on May 16, will end on a cliffhanger and will remain unsolved because of its demise.

Why Young Sheldon was cancelled after 7 seasons

Young Sheldon, the prequel of The Big Bang Theory, ended for a monumental reason. For one thing, Sheldon (Iain Armitage) is already fourteen and heading to CalTech to finish his education. The writers wanted to end the show on a high note instead of focusing on the family's loss, which would be George Cooper's (Lance Barber) death. But this isn't the complete end for the Cooper family.

For fans of Young Sheldon, there's a new spin-off in the works that will premiere this fall. The yet-to-be-titled comedy will focus on Sheldon's older brother, George "Georgie" Cooper (Montana Jordan), and his new wife, Mandy (Emily Osment), as they adjust to married life in Texas and being parents to their daughter, CeeCee.

During Young Sheldon's season seven, the Georgie and Mandy storyline grew, a subtle foreshadowing of the spin-off. While I invested in Georgie and Mandy, as Young Sheldon introduced us to the Cooper family, the writers should've expressed the "uncle" element in Sheldon. It would've been cool to see him bond with his niece and teach her everything science, even if she's only a baby. Perhaps Sheldon will appear in the spin-off, making our wish of having an Uncle Sheldon a reality.
